Ethicalego (Kenneth Brooks) discusses current events from a critical thinking perspective rarely expressed elsewhere

Mitt Romney's time as CEO of Bain Capital may be the bane of his goals for president.

By Kenneth Brooks

7/17/12

President Barrack Obama is making Mitt Romney's time as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and president of Bain Capital, Inc. the bane of his goals to become U.S. president. Romney set the tone of the campaign by persistently criticizing the 8.2 percent unemployment rate under the Obama administration. He touted his success creating jobs at Bane Capital. Obama's team countered with reports that Bain Capital outsourced American jobs to foreign nations. Romney responded he left Bain Capital in 1999 before it started to send jobs out of the United States in 2001 and 2002.

I would expect that someone trying to seize power from any national leader would do so mindful the leader's past victories over opponents. Nevertheless, Romney ignored the need for defense as he moved on offense to paint Obama as a poor leader of the economy. People that concentrate on offense and ignore the need for defense often suffer defeat by knockout in real life conditions.

Obama's team showed 2000 to 2002 Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) documents signed by Romney that he was still CEO and president of Bain Capital. Obama's strategy forced Romney to answer if he was deceitful when he signed the SEC documents or deceitful now telling voters he left the corporation in 1999. Romney tried to avoid answering by making the issue Obama's lack of character for calling attention to Romney's conduct.

Romney appealed to voters' sense of fairness that Obama was not playing by the rules of civility, or playing by Romney rules. Next, he called for an apology for campaign advertisements suggesting that he committed a felony by signing the SEC papers. Recently Romney said in a nationally broadcast interview, "What does it say about a president whose record is so poor that all he can do in this campaign is attack me?'' Those remarks showed Romney's unwillingness to have voters decide accountability based on facts.

Some Republicans and members in the news media tried to explain away this gaffe by showing Romney took no active part running the corporation after 1999. This excuse damaged Romney's image as a responsible leaders more than accepting accountability for Bain Capital outsourcing of jobs would have done. The title CEO and president indicates the person named is responsible for running the corporation. Romney is accountable even if he did not take part in the decisions to outsource jobs. He selected the people that managed the organization in his name.

People with sound leadership ability always accept accountability even if not all their decisions bring ideal results. President Franklin D. Roosevelt displayed leadership traits by his response to the December 7, 1941 Japanese attack on the American fleet and naval base at Pearl Harbor. President Harry S. Truman displayed leadership traits when he issued an executive order that ended racial segregation in the U.S. Defense Department and in the Armed Forces. President George W. Bush showed leadership traits by fashioning a response to Al Qaida's 9/11 attacks on the homeland. President Barack H. Obama displayed the traits of leadership May 1, 2011. He successfully ended the hunt for al Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden by sending U.S. Special Forces teams to a possible Bin Laden hiding place although the information was inconclusive that he was there.

Each president while handling crisis continued his duties in other areas as head of the Executive Branch of the federal government. In contrast, Romney while still listed as CEO of Bain Capital after 1999 denies accountability for its outsourcing of jobs, because he needed to concentrate all his efforts on saving the near bankrupt 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

Obama has inherited a generation of crap from GB the fact that he has been able to clean up so much in a relatively short time bodes well for a second term . Just imagine if our new POTUS continues to kick the can down the road and commits us to more Military expeditions We will be the laughing stock of the globe . What will Mitt do ?? he has already sent thousands of jobs overseas ( this is a fact -he has his fingerprints on it as well as his signature ) Mitt is for Mitt He and boner must use enough hairspray to effect global warming in a big way but they remain stiff and cold
and are not favored by many People of colour as well as many Women . This is why the Obama Camp did a high five when Mitt was the declared front runner . When he gets his ass kicked I hope the MSM deletes the
expected Boner sob-fest We have all seen enough ..

Offshore banking?! The laws and regulations in the United States that permit such things are ALL established by the Congress of the United States.

Half of all Americans of taxpayer age don't pay any income taxes at all--they contribute nothing to this nation's government or for the services provided to them--like defense, the judicial system, and all the rest.

What I want is for Romney to NEVER provide all those tax returns. NEVER! Even if elected. There is NOTHING in the Constitution that makes disclosing income tax returns as a requirement for the Presidency, but there IS a clear
requirement in the Constitution that states that a President must be a natural-born citizen of the United States. There remains a question about Obama's birth, and there is a question about how this admitted pot-smoking, cocaine snorting kid named Obama got into the various colleges & universities.

And we notice that this President of America has no investments in the private sector--even his investments are financed by taxpayers, as are everything else he does. THAT represents a certain choice, a certain philosophy, a certain view of this country. It is not American.

I like Obama the person: smart guy, knows how to have fun, entertaining. But I do NOT like his policies nor do I have any confidence in his ability to move this country forward. His agenda, big government, is flawed.

I understand that there are many that support big government and all it has to offer; it just doesn't work for me because I thing everyone capable needs to pull their weight. The continuation of the entitlement mentality, including subsidized employment and cheese, will be our eventual demise. What we ask for, or even expect, other people in emerging countries are working
hard to obtain. We've lost our edge and our spirit.

Everything now revolves around "what can my government do for me." Obama is catering to this mentality.

Mitt's exact time with Bain on this matter will be pretty easy to unearth. Documents are filed with the SEC, and clearly state positions and duties. This can be done online, without even having to dig through cartons or files. George Will, a "friendly" conservative, noted that the dancing about on tax return issues was looking weak. But, on the "Leadership" point. One of the worst most recent cases of non-leadership would be AG Janet Reno, who took no responsibility for tragic events that transpired under her reign. Currently, AG Eric Holder is similarly
showing shoddy, near amoral leadership skills on the "Fast and Furious" gun debacle, hiding underneath the Presidents' Executive Privilege skirt. The dancing and dodging with the Judiciary Committee, leading to the "Contempt of Congress" vote besmirches the office. No pride there. As for President Truman, on his desk was a wooden plaque with the phrase "The Buck Stops Here". Truman also was fond of the phrase "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen". This from a Missouri Democrat who took the responsibility for dropping two atomic weapons. No
easy decision, that. A decision that's being second-guessed by armchair quarterbacks and historical revisionists to this day. But: Mr. Brooks, why "qualify" your statement regarding President Obama's successful kill of Bin Laden, with your use of words like "possible" and "inconclusive"? Intelligence, particularly with a lying and deceitful country like Pakistan, is very hard to confirm. Leon Panetta himself stated that the Pakistani leadership and military HAD to know Bin Laden was there. So I will give President Obama and the entire White House and DOD team their
props for getting this done. Some leadership I'd like to see, though, some responsibility taken, would be an answer to this disaster: We lost several Gold Team members of Seal Team Six on Saturday, August 6th, 2011, when they were being choppered around in a slow, noisy, and easy to see Chinook helicopter. You can hear these choppers coming three miles away. Why were our men, these most valuable assets, being shepherded around in this transport antique? We've paid billions for the new V-22 Osprey, so why was our best device NOT being used to transport and protect our most valuable men?
No-one took responsibility for this disaster, either.

The fact that Mitt is the best the Republician party could muster is a statement of it's decline . When the truth about Mitt and his offshore banking comes out it will be an election killer "even Joe the
plumber will be revolted " the Obama People are holding back on some real devastating FACTS and you can be sure these will be vetted times ten . The fact is Mitt is not clean otherwise how could he have made so much money for so long .
Bain is just the tip of the Iceburg when the rest of the story comes out it will be his death knell and some exceptional
political Opera ..

Yes, if your experience is limited to stock boy, gardener, buss boy then you're going to agree with the Obama campaign rhetoric. If you've had some real world experience in corporate America then you recognize the difference between an operating manager and primary stock holder. Obama and his failed team appeal to the absolute lowest common denominator in society. The illiterate and the racist.

"Seize Power?" C'mon, Kenneth. You make it sound like a military coup or junta. It's an election. I'm no fan of Mitt and his out-sourcing ways. But, in contrast, I'm no fan of President Obama's cow-towing to the banks, his attacks against Arizona on immigration, or his DOJ suits against state trying to enact voter laws. Further, his comments yesterday regarding "business people" who couldn't have did it on their own without the help of others is a clear and irrefutable nudge towards black voters who feel that white people got where they are on the backs of slaves. Our President
pushed reparations buttons without even mentioning race, reparations, or the 40 acres and a mule. Very calculating, and shrewd of him. I've got to hand it to the President, he's very smart and calculating. Mitt is being out-maneuvered.
