Romney the Bully

By Kenneth Brooks

5/10/12

"And If anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize for that." This was Mitt Romney's version of prominent people's typical mealy-mouthed response to charges of misconduct. Romney made his almost apology after saying, "Back in high school, I did some dumb things."

According to a Washington Post story, by Jason Horowitz, Romney, was upset seeing the dyed blond locks of another male student. Reportedly, "John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality." Romney organized a group of students that attacked Lauber and held him down while Romney cut his hair. Lauber left school long enough to return with brown hair.

I do not place much value on apologies. What someone did was an accident or it was intentional. Someone cannot sincerely apologize for circumstances of an accident she or he did not control. Additionally, someone apologizing for intentional harmful conduct does not change the victim's pain or loss. Nevertheless, the tone of someone's apology does tell us much about the likeness of her or his character then and now. Many people see no relevance between this 1965 incident by high-school senior Romney and his character as presidential candidate 47 years later. I would agree except for his responses to the news article.

"Back in high school, I did some dumb things," Romney said, "And If anybody was hurt by that or offended, obviously I apologize for that." This remark suggests that many of the shallow character traits of a high school senior remain part of Romney's character 47 years later as presidential candidate.

Romney refers to a time-back in high school- and not to specific acts. "Back in high school" could refer to annoying faculty members by streaming their homes with toilet paper. It could refer to bullying weaker or less popular students by jumping ahead of them in line. On the other hand, it could refer to assaulting Lauber and other male students that he decided acted too feminine or that he presumed were gay. An apology does not admit responsibility if it does not specify the bad conduct.

"And if anybody was hurt. . ." Translation, "Forty-six years later, I still do not understand how what I did "back in high school" was offensive or hurtful to anybody. Nevertheless, I apologize if they took offense or felt hurt." This sham of an apology denies responsibility and shifts it to the victim.

I heard Romney in a live radio interview with Brian Kilmeade talk about the article. He said, "I participated in a lot of hijinks and pranks during high school, some might have gone too far, and for that I apologize." Again, he trivializes the pain his assaults caused others by apologizing for "hijinks," noisy and mischievous merrymaking, and for "pranks," tomfoolery. This choice of words effectively denies his bullying did serious harm. He used those terms even as he admitted that he remembered the incident where he and other boys forcibly cut Lauber's hair. Society advanced far since 1965 to understand the continuing stress school bullies cause victims. Nevertheless, Romney obviously missed the message.

Some incidents from youth stick in the mind to influence adult attitudes. I noticed some older students in my new school calling one boy "Sister Brown." I substitute Brown for his actual last name. I knew him from church by his actual name. The nickname seemed disrespectful to me. However, I said nothing. Seemingly, they were friends from kindergarten and he always responded by laughing. However, one day I looked direct into his eyes as he laughed and saw pain and misery so deep and strong it distressed me. They taunted him because they believed he was gay and he understood the scorn. He left town a short time later, but I never forgot that look of pain.

I relate this incident to acknowledge the experiences that influences my conclusion about Romney. He lies when he asserts that homophobia did not motivate his assault on Lauber and others that he perceived exhibited feminine traits. Often, I saw young males target for bullying someone with a small frame and whom they decided displayed female traits. In all cases, they presumed the targeted person was gay. It is not a coincidence that many adults living openly gay were high school targets of taunting assaults by Romney and his gang of vigilantes. Nevertheless, Romney claims he never knew or presumed them gay in high school.

The news about Romney's bullying conduct in high school is not necessarily a relevant indicator of his adult character. Nevertheless, he makes it relevant with responses more characteristic of the bullying teenager than of someone who matured and changed attitude over the past 46 years.

High school! You've got to be kidding! Who cares about that. Pretty much everyone in high school is stupid. That's why "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" was made and was successful--people understand and identify with that movie.

As for bullying--and believe me when I say that I supported this action & decision fully--but President Obama's decision to authorize Navy Seals to take the head shots at those Somali pirates was an act of 'bullying'. Damn right! And Obama's decision to authorize Navy Seals to raid and take down Osama bin Laden was an act of 'bullying'.

Couldn't happen to
a bigger dirtbag who is now in oblivion.

If this is the big skeleton in Romney's closet then I'd say he's a pretty good man and has lived a pretty upstanding life. High school prank you say? Cut someones hair? Give us a break. I'm sure Chris Matthews will be getting another tingle up his leg again right on cue. What a farce the big corporate media has become.

@Elimax: Not everything Reagan did shines like gold - - Deregulation of the busing and airline industry? How's that working out? But: The whole incident with Mitt illustrates his jock/cheerleader mentality. To have been the one wielding the scissors, and now claim no memory of the incident, is, dubious at best. Of the handful of physical altercations I had during junior and high school, the details are still pretty strong. Long since forgot all the boring history classes. You see, our brains remember these things either very well, as like the details of a car accident or wreck or similarly
traumatic experience. Or, amnesia sets in, and there's no recollection at all, the brains' method of protecting itself from highly charged, often dangerous happenings. Mitt's trying to stake out a middle ground on the matter, and that doesn't work. This is not a ringing endorsement of President Obama, but rather a credibility issue for Mitt. Now, as for people on the dole, we've got a converging problem of no factories to provide assembly line or blue collar jobs, mixed up with a population of high school graduates whose only direction appears to be college, with precious few skilled in the
trades, be it welding, electrical, pipe fitting or steam, etc. What's alarming about this is that during WWII, many American citizens possessed lots of those types of skills, and thus helped out factories crank out planes, tanks, ships, bombs, etc. Our very outsourcing to China strengthens them, and weakens us. Having a degree is useful, particularly if it's in Mechanical, Chemical or Electrical Engineering. (Not so much Psychology and similar "social" studies) At the same time, knowing how to fix engines, repair heating and air, plumbing and other trades also has significant value.
Remember that the next time you need a qualified plumber or electrician in a jiffy, you'll be happy to pay up, and now. So: Our graduates (If, say, from Vallejo, they EVEN graduate) often possess little real world, practical skills, AND, even if they did, a diminishing number of companies at which to put those skills to work. I would LOVE to seriously hurt welfare and social programs as we now see them, because, yes, they DO bleed our capital. But, with everything sent overseas, and many young 'uns having little or no practical skills, we've got a serious convergence of issues that does NOT
bode well. One freaking bit.

Shame on you Elimax, you bring a collection of sane comments to a message board like this and ruin what was otherwise a fine, fine, liberal, farmers market morning. You should be ashamed of yourself. You should have posted gushing praise for our dear leader. /sarc

You know it's bad when the liberal left has to pull 47 year old stories that may or may not have actually happened in order to try and go after a candidates character. This is very telling....

Lets see.....tried to go after him on Mormon polygamy, then realized Barry's Father had multiple wives...fail

Tried to go after his company for cutting jobs...then realized that it was either come in and fix the companies or let them go bankrupt...oops couldn't distort this one.

The liberals that are addicted to the gov't tit have really got a problem......a qualified republican candidate that is a
model for family, business, and fixing problems.

Can you say Carter/Reagan.....yep I guess you'll actually have to get up off the couch and go back to work, Barry's handouts are going to come to an end.

A very thoughtful observation, Mr. Brooks, if a bit overdone. There can be a Lord of the Flies aspect to young people, and if Mitt fell in with it, shame on him. But I don't think that's the same Mitt I see today. He might give another company a haircut, laying off thousands of people, but he wouldn't buzz a buy for being gay. I think. Love, Jim

Great observations, Mr. Brooks. Romney's apology reminds me of Osby Davis' "they took my remarks out of context" and his pseudo-apology.

Ah c'mon.....ya got to be able to take as well as dish it out. It's a forum. My apologies if my sarcasm was over the top for you.

Or, do you expect your every word to be taken as the Spoken Truth rather than your opinion, which, incidentally, I enjoyed reading.
Anonymous too   |May.11.2012
@salty dog It is just not worth posting here as the intelligence or rather, cutting sarcasm is not worth my time.

In other words, you can KMA. buh bye.

Pretty harsh there, Anon. Pretty well covered all the bases in one easy paragraph.

I understand that Obama used to pull the wings off flies as a recreational game back in Kenya.

He has no idea either. What to do, what to do. Libertarian?

He put his dog on top of his station wagon in a car carrier while it pooped and peed on itself.

The man has been given everything all his life. He is a taker. He calls for war with Iran but knows he would not send not 1 of his 5 sons. But, he will send yours or mind and not think twice. If it would earn him another million, he would gladly by a company and put 250 or more people out of work.

Like Bush and most of the uber rich sons of pukes, he has no idea.

@ Educate Yourself: The screed by Barnhardt comes from the same loopy thinking that believes that tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and other occurrences come from the anger of God, for deeds committed by us humans. This fringe thinking is what gives mainstream Christianity a bad name, besmirching good, honest, down-to-earth folks with your superstitious notions. I think gullible ran off with your reasoning abilities, or something. I've got some aluminum foil kicking around, in case you need to quick- like craft a hat to protect you from the coming solar flares.

C'mon, Mr Brooks....Romney has "evolved" since the sixties as we all have.

American politics is dirty, dirty, dirty.
Obama has suddenly "evolved" and now has the Hollywood money secured.

Concomitantly, Romney is established as a high school bully. All within a twenty four hour news cycle.

Where is Zimmerman when you need him.
Spot On Mr Brooks   |May.10.2012
You hit the nail on the head Mr. Brooks. He claims to not remember, but you don't forget those types of acts. I'm sure Lauber remembered it until his death.
