At a recent performance at the Empress Theatre which featured Laura Dorais and the Jazz Connection followed by the Mel Brooks classic slapstick Western “Blazing Saddles,” the Executive Director took the stage between acts to make an important announcement.

B.J. Lipari announced that the Empress will be severely cutting back on their movie nights. “We are just not able to make expenses,” he said. Indeed there were only about twenty-eight people in the audience by the time the movie started. By the time they pay a band, utility and other expenses, it simply cannot ‘pencil out.’ The Empress staff has made a valiant effort, and the idea of a musical review prior to the movie, coupled with Martinis or wine, was a good one. The public would just not support it to the level of need, however. On the other hand, their concept of the ‘Wednesday Night Ramble’ which features different musical presentations on Wednesday evenings is going strong, and will be continued indefinitely. Lipari also mentioned that they will begin to bring “some big name comedy” in as well. “The board is insisting that we maintain at least one movie weekend each month,” Lipari said.

Despite the poor attendance during other performances, on a recent weekend the Benicia Ballet packed the house. There was a forty-two person orchestra conducted by the formidable Steven D. Thompson, and just about as many children on stage. The house was literally ‘standing room only.’ Hundreds of people came to listen to the orchestra and watch the children. (As is well known in theatre, if you have an animal or a child on stage, you are almost guaranteed a hit.) Audience member Mary Ewart of Vallejo had this to say: “As a parent I appreciate this school’s display of inclusivity and diversity among students of different sizes, backgrounds and creative talents. The instructors encourage students to find their individual creative expressions. Students are never made to feel as though they have to fit in a square box. Of course, it was great for the students to experience performing in such a fantastic venue as the Empress Theatre.” The Benicia Ballet paid the Empress $1,000 for the day of performance which also included myriad days of rehearsal. Audience entrance fee for the performance was free.

There are many wonderful volunteers holding the Empress together. “They are one of our most important assets,” said Lipari. Volunteer Linda Inderbitzen volunteered both on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. She is a particularly constant and stalwart volunteer. “She is almost always here,” said Lipari. But they have so many wonderful volunteers too numerous to mention in this space.“We will be offering a lot more entertainment diversity in the future,” said B.J.“We’ll keep everyone posted. We have some outstanding talent coming up, I just hope people come downtown to the Empress to enjoy it,” he said. The Empress has little money for advertising, so please spread the word.

Since we are a diverse community.... How about film festival for Indian films, Filipino films, Hispanic films, Navy films, Pirate films, Asian films, documentaries on social problems......

We have so many film festivals in bay area, maybe we can find a niche or two for ourselves with our wonderful facility.

Thank you, Paula, for attending the show! You're are a SUPERSTAH, SISTAH!

More family matinee shows at the Empress would be great, especially during the winter.

Thank you Paula McConnell for this report. Well done.

I agree with you Firebug, there is always some revenue potential. How to thread the market is the question. Very difficult to execute in Vallejo, requires expert marketers.

Rock on Rocket man, Peace be upon you.

avatar I think kids and family days are a great idea.

This is a low-rent town with a fairly low median income. The big plans for an upscale community on Mare Island blew out 4 years ago with the economy. The massive collapse of real estate values has devasted this town and drove the City government into bankruptcy.

And unfortunately the Empress is in downtown Vallejo, which is truly a strange place to go--especially at night. Between the mentally ill, the arrogant racists and thugs who dominate the street scene, going to downtown Vallejo is NOT a relaxing time. The term 'diversity' does NOT apply to downtown Vallejo.
kids stuff   |August.22.2012
I remember going to see a kids christmas movie there, and it was packed. The Empress would do well if it had venues for families in the afternoon. I think the Star Wars screenings would be great. Have costume contests and so on. By the way, The Good Day Cafe was packed with members of the Benicia Orchestra on the day the Benicia Ballet was there.
films at Cinemark   |August.22.2012
I would wait to view the films I go to see at the Cinemark in Pleasanthill if they would show them at the Empress, most of us film lovers dont care if the film is a month behind the release or not, we just want to go see films.

My husband does not like to go to the movies at the Empress because he says they make too much a big deal out of it on Friday nights, he just wants to see the film, does not want music or entertainment before hand, does not need a martini, just wants pop corn and a soda, wants to watch the movie at 7pm not 8pm, I can no longer get him to the empress any longer. He
says "lets go to the cinemark in Pleasanthill, I just want to watch a film, not a full production..."

I forgot to add another type of venue competing for entertainment dollars: The Casinos. I've been fortunate to see the Gregg Allman Band at Cache Creek, and Dwight Yoakum up at Thunder Valley's Summer Series outside, and even Tower of Power down at Chukchansi. The casinos also feature calorie laden buffet's a mile long. AND. Safe parking lots where security patrols on a regular basis. Vehicle and personal security simply isn't an issue. One can leave the GPS and laptop in the trunk without undue concern. This, along with the other musical venues I mentioned, are what the Empress is up against.

The "feel" downtown isn't good during the day, at night it's a whole 'nuther matter. I guess I'm a pretty good example of what's gone wrong, and Rhonda Lucile Hicks is pretty close to nailing it. In the last couple of years, I've willingly travelled to the Uptown in Napa for Marshall Tucker and Los Lobos shows, the Fox in Oakland to a benefit for Norton Buffalo that featured Bonnie Raitt, The Doobie Brothers and the Steve Miller band, and to the Concord Pavilion to see Thin Lizzy and Judas Priest. The only show that even had me tempted at the Empress was Rita Coolidge, whose career,
for this listener, passed from my speakers and headphones back when she and Kris Kristoffererson parted ways. (A long, long, time ago) In addition to the aforementioned Uptown in Napa, Petaluma has the Mystic/McNears rocking along, as well as the Paramount in Oakland. The Uptown recently had Chris Isaak, and upcoming shows are John Hiatt, Robert Cray, Blues Traveler, The Outlaws, etc. These are events that my wallet might follow my "Little Feat" (Who has also appeared)

@Salt
A most witty post wich brings to mind a
naughty and mischevious responce (pardon the spelling) I propose we open all public meetings with the wonderful music from Bertolt Brechect's Masterpiece "three penny opera" kinda a local anthem for all those who survive by pickpocketing and grifting the locals , after all if there is no honor among theives , then god save us from the City Staff . If at the beginning of each public meeting we all stood up with our hand over our wallet or purse while the anthem played it would be a most appropiate opening ceramony and a good tune to
boot !!

One the whole, viewed with a wide angle across the entire Vallejo community, this was a poor investment of taxpayer money. When this theater finally closes it's doors it will likely be sold at a fire sale to a private investor for pennies on the taxpayer dollar. It represents the failure of people who believe they are smart but in fact are really just rent seekers looking for a handout from the taxpayers. Epic fail by a small special interest group who are no better than the political foes they do battle with day in and day out.
Mariner's Landing   |August.21.2012
They are showing movies that nobody wants to see. That, in addition to, it is scary downtown at night.

That is why movie night has poor attendance.

How about showing showing first run movies that the general population wants to see. It means the residents of 201 Maine will be there. Just have plenty of security and put in a budget for repairs. The Empress is like having a living room with plastic covers on the furniture. We have it but the locals are allowed in.

I support all kinds of cultural initiatives in Vallejo, including the Theater.... but I have often wondered..and forgive me for vearing off course a bit....

Why not have one or two Vallejo symphony presentations on Farmers Market day (following or near the end) right in the circle on Georgia. I bet people would stay to listen and perhaps would infuse some interest in coming back.

A little rousing music goes a long way to changing attitudes. A little Dvorjak's New World Symphony, throw in some Star Wars, and perhaps some other movie theme music- The Caine Mutiny....kinda fits with Mare
Island.

Good job Mr. Lipari thank you for your work at Empress. Look forward and do what you feel better for Theater and community.

Programming has to be fine tuned, adjusted and sometimes an audience (or lack of audience) tells you that you need to go in a completely different direction. What is on The Empress stage is entertainment and people have to want to go see a show. The Empress gave the music and movies a long run - over a year and a half - but there is a point where you have to accept it's not working. An audience votes with it's feet, and if they don't come, you need to deal with that reality. Please don't see this programming change as a failure, but understand it for what it is -- a course correction.
There are so many positives at The Empress -- The Wednesday Night Ramble, upcoming concerts that include the Vallejo Symphony, BeaufunK CD Release Concert, Danny Click and the Hell Ya Orchestra, The Santa Margherita String Quartet, comedy show with Showtime star Don Friesen. You try different things, you see what works and what doesn't, and you make adjustments - all part of an ordinary day at the venue.
