Violence: A Community's Problem

By Vallejo City Councilmember Stephanie Gomes

Along with many people this week, I watched in horror as the brutal attack of Harold Cabral, one of our City of Vallejo public works employees, unfolded on video clips released by the Vallejo Police Department. It was sickening to watch and horrifying to see that people – especially kids – could act with such callous, senseless brutality. It’s just haunting.

Silas, you need to keep Sam Kurshan away from your computer. You KNOW where his hands have been.
Firebug, I will have to respectfully disagree with you on the race thing. If a group of whites or Hispanics had done this to a black man, the Mayor and his church going followers would have lined the streets. As it is, the Mayor had nothing to say other than we are safe. Not at all encouraging to me. As far as Gomes goes, I don't believe her. You can only crap on people so long before they stop respecting you and Gomes has crapped on PD long enough. To now say we all need to work together seems
too little, too late.

avatar Actually Silas made the mistake of hiring me, and I couldn't resist having a little fun with his old computer.

Maybe Silas borrowed the IT person at Global Center to set up his network.

avatar "informational resources void of prejudices" sounds more like me doesn't it? The lesson you need to have learned is who you invite over to help you setup your new network. Sorry I just couldn't resist
silasbarnabe   |February.09.2010
avatar Wow! I get a brand new Dell installed it on late saturday with a new trick wireless N router and I get hacked in a matter of hours. Lesson learned setup your out of the box admin password with a strong password, and be sure to setup the new WAP with WPA security. Lucky I hadn't got around to entering most of my financial or other password data. "informational resource void of prejudices" is that even possible? Someone had some fun at my expense.
David Cary   |February.08.2010
No, I am not with H Martin Foundation.

I've spent my own money, time and energy finding solutions. I don't much care whether you decide to support me.

That said, only 1-2% of VCUSD black and hispanics young men are expected to graduate from college.

Probably no coorelation what so ever to the violence. What do you think?

Keep on doing what you've always done Vallejo, and you'll keep getting what you've always got.
silasbarnabe   |February.08.2010
avatar Very sad but it appears that the father of one of the accused beaters somehow wound up dead.

http://cbs5.com/local/vallejo.fatal.shooting.2.1479212.html

I do not expect him to have any of the advocacy that others have enjoyed in the press and on this websight, but there are those of us outside of the corrupt local news that are working with locals to start an informational resource that is void of prejudices, and other sorts of financial advocacies. Stay tuned!
Kyra Iverson   |February.08.2010
I believe the violence going on in Vallejo is a direct result of lack of attention and motivation. I am a student who attends high school in Vallejo and my past four years i have witnessed the downward spiral of my fellow students. Even though mostly they have themselves to blame for their bad action its not just their fault. As an adult do you remember spending one of you whole years in school in a class where you had a substitute the entire time? A substitute who didn't care if you were there or not? Can you recall one teacher that inspired you? About 85% of my fellow students can not! If
the idols you look up to sing about violence, sex, and drugs 24/7 what else would someone yearning for enlightenment dream about? Vallejo has failed to provide DECENT education and outreach programs for its young generation. It is not comforting to see schools like Napa and Bencia have all these opportunities available to them and our city is like 10 minutes away and we have nothing? I don agree with any of the actions made by those group of kids who acted the worker. In fact I find it horrifying. But as adults and members of the community instead of criticizing this generation, these young
adults, have you ever stopped to ask yourself; whats their motivation? What have I done to encourage them? What dreams and opportunities are available to them in this city? Oh, besides working at Discovery Kingdom!
vallejo high student   |February.08.2010
i think what happpend to the city worker by vallejo high school students was horrible. I have sympathy for the man who was attacked and anger towards my peers who have contributed to the stereotypes that some of us work hard to silence. I hope that people see that not all of us teens in Vallejo are as violent and irresponsible.
VIBReader   |February.07.2010
David, are you with the H Martin Foundation?

whatifvallejo.com reminds people of the H Martin Foundation, a rip off organization with false promises and fake money.

whatfivallejo.com needs to be investigated, just like H Martin.

I would be hesitant to support whatifvallejo.com when there are legitimate organizations out there.

Waz up mentioned KCBS, They interviewed Oakland's new police chief this morning. I was blown away by the observations this gentleman made. He--the POLICE CHIEF--complained that the only news coming out of Oakland was crime related, and folks outside of Oakland never hear the good stuff, and all the negative press creates an imbalance & hurts Oakland.

Batts said Oakland has 1/2 the police force it needs, but they are experiencing difficult budget constraints and he acknowledged he must work with what he has, and he has to be creative.

I suggest Nichelini (who lives in Oakland) listen to
this interview.

avatar If the murals by some or one account are to be labeled as significant perhaps someone could tell us how much money we lost on the deal? I know that we have lost 75 or more percent of the general fund every council we have voted in for 20 years. Please shown that murals are more significant than salaries and beneifits and I will be right there for you....if not then....
Anonymous   |February.07.2010
Momster, learn to spell for god's sake. Your obsession with the mural is tiresome. Do you have any idea how shrill you sound? Get over it and move on.
momster   |February.07.2010
nope, it's all about the attitude in Vallejo. This is just prime example of what goes on behind the scenes. Too bad O'keefe didn't have an audio recorder so that he could have tape what went on in the meeting. The LBGT community would have been mordified.

I suggest anyone who is going to meet with any deparatment heads from City Hall behind close doors to get a good transcriber to record the minutes and have the transcript noterized. Vallejoans need to know how inebt they are.

Your obsession with Henke had made you neglect everything else in Vallejo.
silasbarnabe   |February.07.2010
avatar anonymous and Waz,
Keep in mind with the current contract the VPOA will likely make them the highest compensated police department in California after July 1. Any new tax without a contract adjustment will just mean a tiny amount of officers added to the payrolls at the inflated contract rate. You both bring up excellent points, and I find the timing around the Matt Mustard $100,000 infomercial, and the ignoring of violence around the rest of the bay area except for Vallejo to be a concerted effort by friends of VPOA, and the VPOA to get tax hikes in Vallejo.
I also find it offensive with
gang beatings all around the bay area including Vallejo that the beating of a Vallejo city employee would garnish so much attention and outcry for more leadership from our city leaders. This is further evidence that city employees somehow matter more than the folks they serve. As for your story Marc I am going to tell you how I see it, you behaved wrecklessly and irresponsibly concerning your well being, and Mr. Cabral's wreckless and irresponsible behavior exemplefied that you could also have been "Cabralled" in a tragic twist of fate. Please know that I respect you, look up to you,
and as a human being have behaved irresponsibly in my years, but I just feel you need to be know my opinion about what you did and what Mr. Caral did. I alos have been called out on my behavior by friends, and family so please do not take this personal or like I am acting as if I am better than you, I know I have screwed up and I have appreciated being called out on my behavior, I hope you do too. I can't imagine where Vallejo would be without you, this media, and your outstanding perspective about what is happening in Vallejo should you have been killed.
curious   |February.07.2010
Who do our noble PSU's think is going to pay more taxes so they can bloat their salaries, bennies and retirement checks AND hire more of their friends? The State? Not... The Feds? they have a few problems of their own. New Vallejo businesses and industry? dream on.. The beleaguered citizens? Everybody that can is bailing. How about the slumlords and absentee landlords? Oh yeah, the Board of Realtors and the Chamber will make sure that they continue to be protected. The welfare, section 8, parolees and drug rehab recipients? They don't have any money.

When the host dies, the
parasites will try to move on to another warm blooded victim. But there aren't any left as California collapses under the weight of years of public employee exploitation. We are all in trouble and neither VIB, Marc or any of the brave women on the City Council are culpable.
Waz up wid dat   |February.07.2010
Some of us belive that KCBS is the "mouth piece" for the VPD, someone works for KCBS that is a sympathic ear. There has been a lot of violence in Oakland and San Francico lately, inlcluding a triple, double shooting, and a shooting in front of a middle school in Oakland as well as a shooting at McClymonds High School. KCBS and other news media never reported any of this. The 25+ gang member fight between the Sorenos and the Nortenos behind an exclusive shopping center in Napa was never reported on by the media. The shooting death of a woman in Richmond whose murderer boyfriend
drove around with her body in the car was barely mentioned. The VPD are making sure that every crime story is being fed to the media for exposure, its no mistake that a vote to keep or remove binding arbitration from the City Charter is coming up on the June Ballot. The pressure is on folks, Vallejo get ready for bad press. Lets not ever forget that the "boys in blue" and the "heroes in red" went on strike at the same time during the Zodiac Killing spree during the 1970's, its how we got binding arbitration in our charter, fear mongering...

Sorry to say that voting is only one part of your community responsibility. If you want something to happen in Vallejo, stop whining and get off your lazy butt and start working for it. No one person, or seven, can do it all.

You lost Vallejo's youths the day the City painted over vhs YOUTH'S "NO Violance" MURAL and the day Code Enforcement painted over butterfly painted k-rails painted by children, the day the City painted over the sacred image of Pieta just to show your poWErs. You guys, Councilmembes and department heads, are stifling in every way. Quit telling us how to act and do your jobs and start CREATING. No one deserves to beaten but as far as I'm concerned this is your KARMA--to busy hating on Henke I guess. When City council members learn not eye roll and snicker then you can advise the
community how to act.

Gran Torino, yes let's get rid of the parasites. I will be happy to pay for the U Haul to haul your dumb mouth out of town!
Oberver   |February.06.2010
OK, now I know the crazies have come out of hiding. This morning I saw an old white guy at the Glen Cove Safeway wearing a T-Shirt sporting a conferate flag and a revolver in a holster. He went through the check-out line with hardly a reaction from anybody in line. As much as I believe that this guy would like to shoot a person of color, this can't be the answer to our problems. The thugs that attacked the city employee and the two kids that shot the ice cream vendor should be punished severely, but Vallejo residents shouldn't turn on each other. I believe that the police are enjoying every
minute of the current controversy and will exploit it. Kudos to Ms. Gomes for bringing reason to complicated series of events.
Gran Torino   |February.06.2010
Double pd fd,

Wow, thanks for your amazing insight. Why didn't I come up with that nugget of wisdom? Just double public safety!

Hmmm, one problem. We don't have the money. Like I said in my previous post, I'd love to have more cops.

Soooo, after considering your insult and your brilliant ideas, I have to say we are back at square one since at the salaires we pay, we can only afford a certain # of employees.

Now that I have explained that to you I will repeat what I said earlier. Getting ride of parasites is the first step in getting this city back on track. Once that is done,
our finances will allow for more cops and you can attempt to tackle the thug problem. Are you a parasite?
double pd fd   |February.06.2010
gran torino, your just so dumb. 20 more cops will help in a dump like Vallejo.

Here is what you do, go to the bathroom, take a long look in the mirror, and then you will see a huge reason why this town sucks.
Gran Torino   |February.06.2010
We may have different ideas on how to best control crime and reduce the population of thugs in this town, but I think we can all agree that ridding ourselves of self-serving parasites like Kurt Henke is a step in the right direction.
Over the past 15 years Vallejo wrote the book on bad city contracts, political/public employee incest and union corruption. We all see where that got us. We had no choice but to recognize this through our inevitable bankruptcy filing.
Now that the mess is out the open in broad daylight our best bet moving foreward is to make certain the Kurt Henke's of the
world and their elected buddies never get the power to do this to us again.

Not in my lifetime.
Shay58   |February.06.2010
Thank you Stepahnie. You are attempting to address this situation head on. Because I know you believe in our city and our potential I will support you and your efforts in every way possible.
BROADWAY   |February.06.2010
Broadway at Nebraska looks blighted. There are drug dealers on the corners, many of the buildings are run down, including the horrible bright blue one that is owned by a man in American Canyon. Vallejo high school kids loiter in large groups after school. The place needs to get cleaned up, students should be made to leave the area and not loiter after school. Commerical property owners need to be forced by the city to clean up and paint their horrible buildings. This is a bad influence on kids, and drug dealers like to operate in blighted areas, as they feel "at home." Does the
City of Vallejo have a "no loitering" law on its books? Per Chief Nichelini loitering is not against the law, if we dont have this rule on the books, it needs to be adopted by the City. Loitering in groups often equates to "bullying" and establishing a territory by drug dealers and gang members. This city has been far too liberal for far too long, time to get mean!
silasbarnabe   |February.06.2010
avatar So that's it? Someone calling employee contracts unaffordable is attacking police and firefighters? Your contracts are not unaffordable and we now have a precedent aetting bankruptcy decision to prove it.
Another Other   |February.06.2010
Send the kids and their parents to Antioch!!!! Let's dump all our problems on Antioch or Richmond or maybe send them to Hiddenbrooke...to Mr. Davis' house....that is, until it gets sold at public auction.

Close down all section 8 and welfare villages!!!! Just kidding.

If the driver were black would the black kids have attacked him? One wonders. And, yes, race does enter into most things...that doesn't make one racist if one questions or ponders out loud. I've used terms like 'poor', 'thug', 'section 8' and been accused of being a racist..yet, all the poor, all the thugs and all the
section 8's are not of one race.
No Diff   |February.05.2010
Have all the kumbayah meetings you want. It won't make one bit of difference. The kids and the parents are losers who will never amount to anything in life. Give them a billion chances and every single one will be thrown away in stupidity. All they want is hand-outs and the kids see that they have nothing to lose as a result. Punish the parents and the kids for starters.
On Fire   |February.05.2010
avatar XVallejo, can we move past stupidity here. The Mayor is supposed to be held accountable for all of the citizens in Vallejo. To imply that he is unresponsive because of the race of the people involved doesn't make sense at all. Now I would be the last person to defend the mayor but it appears that we have a bunch of closet racist that are looking to promote more tension within the community. Making this whole issue about race is far reaching. There is no evidence that says that the people involved sought out the city employee because he was Hispanic. Let's leave the race baiting issues out of
the situation unless you have facts that show otherwise.
ANONYMOUS   |February.05.2010
LAMO/GRAN TORINO: Why are you hitting Henke, I read his remarks (if they were really his)and saw them very factual, while at the same time complimenting Ms. Gomes. Do you not admit that she was very hard on the Firefighters & Police over the years, yes it mainly had to do with their salaries and for this I do not disagree with her. But you have to admit her remarks did get alot of you riled up and some of you, not her, got pretty nasty.(remember Madam Lange's rude remarks) I do not believe that Ms. Gomes ever expected these results and is now trying to handle the situation and I think Henke?
was saying that. Get over your indivual prejudices and work with her to better the City. You seem to only offer your hatred, at least Ms.Gomes is trying to go forward. God Bless her and my best to Ass't Chief Henke is his new job...Have a happy day...

ANONYMOUS 2   |February.05.2010
I believe Ms. Gomes hit it right on the head, when she said the problem starts at home. Regardless of how many PS'ers we have on duty, these people (yes, that was a racist referral) do not respect others. Now is our #1 Councilwoman wants to really help, she should make sure that those "junveniles" that are arrested are identified publically. I as a citizen has a right to know who they are, who their families are and where they live, so I will not have to be around them or them family. There is not a law protecting juveniles, only a courtesy extended and they have not earned such
courtesty. We all should demand that their names and families are publicized. I hope Ms. Gomes can get that done........lets save our City.
Gran Torino   |February.05.2010
Really Kurt? Is that really you?

Kurt, you need to look in the miror my boy. You did more than anyone to help take this city to where it is today, and not in a good way. You did nothing but help yourself and your cohorts line your pockets. Hypocrite? Now now Kurt. Look hard in the miror. Tell me what you see.

And another thing-

Get off my lawn.
LMAO   |February.05.2010
Oh Kurt, you so funnie! So glad you are g-o-n-e.

For those who like to place blame on the one council member who has actually made a difference in this community - what have you done? Really? Have you done anything but sit on your backsides and blame? No, I don't think so.

Stephanie, I am proud I voted for you 2 times. You are the only one up there who I feel represents me. Thank you!
Kurt Henke   |February.05.2010
Stephene you are the one who pointed fingers at a lot of people over the years. You are being a Hypocrite on this issue. You attacked the Police and Firefighters for the last 4 years and now want to get along and move the city forward. I hope you are sincere for peoples lives depend on it. I will have to take my Hat off to you for this. You are certainly smarter then The Mayor Or Wilson and Hannigan. I am saddened every day for the Men and Women in the Police and Fire departments who have cut there pay and bennifits only to be demonized bye LIES.
Whazzup man   |February.05.2010
I was smoking out and my old lady was painting a 'mural' on some store and some punks rolled me man, what a drag. Then the police wouldn't come cuz I called from my cell man but couldn't give an address an so the city council sux cuz they didn't, you know, come and help me find where I lived and git me home.

Freakin' losers all y'all. And the weenies on here talking about what the pole-eece did or didn't do, you wanna wash my drawers cuz that's all you are qualified to do?

And because of you I didn't get christmas cards!
wondering   |February.05.2010
I cant agree more. If this was a group of guys beating up on a gay person, there would be more outrage. There would be more outrage if this was an animal cruelty incident that was caught on a video recorder. No it was a guy working to support his family and to pay his taxes, so the people that beat him up can still live in their subsidize lifestyle in perpetuity.
xvallejo   |February.05.2010
This issue is very very clear.. had this been a group of white guys beating up an african american, the city council and the mayor would be outraged and talking all about a hate crime, there would be public protests. From what i understand this was a non african american being attacked by as many as 40 african ameicans who were calling him racist names. Why not call it what it is A HATE CRIME and they should be charged that way.Maybe the mayor will get his way if crime gets any worse all those Gays's will leave, so the mayor and his good old christian haters can take over the city. They can have
it. I was living there and had 3 blk guys try and break in by breaking my door down with me in the house, it took over 30 min for the police to come, so I moved out of vallejo, I had to or i would have become a racist too,I dont wanna live that way.How can you teach the youth of vallejo to respect people who are different then them when he has shown no respect for the lgbt cummunity?????He is a terrible city leader and he should be recalled
Anonymous   |February.05.2010
"If those fellows believe that crime will be reduced with more cops let's see them put in their contracts."

Thats the best suggestion I've heard!

And a great way to look at the issue: as the PSUs blame a reduced force for tese crimes, if they City could guarantee a "full force", they should guarantee no crimes like these, as its because of the reduced force these crimes happended, eh?
silasbarnabe   |February.05.2010
avatar On fire-
Love your post ! To the Gomes haters, please list some facts so we can debate them.
Gran Torino,
If those fellows believe that crime will be reduced with more cops let's see them put in their contracts.
On Fire   |February.05.2010
avatar Wondering, it's your type of mentality that brings this city down. I'm sure that it's listening to crap like you spew "They are ghetto people that have no respect for human life" that adds to the problems.

What is your solution? What are you doing to help Vallejo? So far it seems that the only thing you can contribute is more diatribe that fuels the flames of racism. You are the true muck raker.
On Fire   |February.05.2010
avatar Craazy, the comment attributed to Ms. Gomes was made how long ago? It would be great if you are going to quote her that you at least get the context of the discussion correct. At the time, the public safety employees were looking at a reduction in their budget. The comment was in reference to that time period and she never said we didn't have a crime problem. It just hadn't shown any increase "at that time". At that same meeting, the police chief acknowledged that there was no significant increase in crime. So let's move on.

I just love it how people get their rear ends in the air
and start complaining that "somebody" needs to do "something" about the problem of our city being divided and the crime. Then they go on to complain that Council isn't addressing the problem. And as soon as "someone" makes a suggestion on coming together as community and trying to find some solutions, these same people blast the suggestions. Just can't make up your minds can you?

Do you want to work on making Vallejo better or are you going to just make it into your chance to make a swipe at those who are willing to try?

And Ms.-Change-Your-Name, like we don't
know who you are..., ENOUGH WITH THE MURAL PROJECT!

It's over and if you want it to eat away at you for eternity that that's on you. But we don't care to hear about it every time Gomes name comes up. You think it's a solution, then put together another project without using city funds or city employees. Try raising the funding on your own and stop looking for hand outs. Just do it!Otherwise, your just another one of the whiners, still sucking on lemons. That's not helping the situation or moving in a positive direction.
Gran Torino   |February.05.2010
...and the fear mongers drone on. To repeat what I said in my other post, Vallejo is not Danville or Mill Valley. Crime is an issue, has been an issue for decades, and will continue to be an issue. Antioch, Pittsburg, Hayward all strugle as we do. Oakland and Richmond are worse. Personally, I live in Vallejo because its better than any of the places I listed.

The PSU folks would like you to believe that if somehow we had an extra 20 cops this stuff would not happen. I got news for you. We don't buy the BS. Would I like to have another 20 cops? Sure. Would it make a whole lot of
difference? Maybe a little, probably not a whole lot. We could have a police force of 300 and crime may go down slightly, but not much.
The political hackery that comes through the pike here and at the Horrid is so blatantly obvious. Fear tactics, hysterical rants, blame this politician, blame that person, proclaim were all going to hell in a handbasket and soon.
I DONT BUY IT. Some of these posts are so blatantly sour grapes from current or ex PSU that it reeks to high hell. Some day they will finally tire or it, give up, or have bigger fish to fry when other inevitably municipalities
go through the same money issues we are experiencing. God, I hope its sooner rather than later, it gets tiring hearing the same folks spout the same propoganda day after day after day after day after day.
whatever.   |February.05.2010
very nice commentary Ms Gomes: now instead of talking the talk, why don't yu walk it. What are going to do to make this situation better? As I recall there were two artist that wanted create an afterschool mural program for at-risk youths and you let Code Enforcement take charge of it. You had one of the original community art muralist from SF in your office and you let Code Enforcement talk. What a big mistake on your part. You know went down at that meeting last winter.

Cant stand what. Not being shot not being mauled by a bunch high school kids. Are you that blind. I can defend myself from people like them. I just dont know how to defend myself from people like you.
PSU Watch   |February.05.2010
What do these two incidents have to do with respecting the VPD cops? The cops had NOTHING to do with them. Cops don't typically prevent crimes. You could have had 10 more cops on the street before these incidents and most likely they would have happened anyway.

Respect is earned. The way some of you romper room PSUs are behaving, you'll never be respected in this town.
Anonymous   |February.05.2010
Exactly, Firebug. I keep thinking that I can't be more disgusted with the PSUs, and something happens to bring it to a whole new low level. They're shameless. It's all about the $$$$$$$.
Firebug   |February.05.2010
avatar I think it is shameless to attempt to profit from the frailties of Vallejoans. We see this as a tragedy and the PSU's and their apologists see this as a money making opportunity.

Oh, you Horrid-ites just can't stand it, can you? Too funny.
Anonymous   |February.05.2010
So, Stephanie, does this unfortunate City Worker incident, along with the Ice Cream truck shooting incident, convinces you now to respect the Vallejo PD cops? This Vallejo becoming like Sausalito idea that some of the VIB folks have been promoting is a fantasy. Vallejo is and has always been a working class town with a seriously rough edge. Vallejo is currently now a divided town, alot of it along racial lines -- White, Black, Latino, Filipino. Vallejo is a race war powder-keg ready to go off. One more fatal incident, and I'm afraid that Vallejo will be in the national news for a four-way race
war.

What a crock of crap. Now she's a social engineer. They are ghetto people that have no respect for human life. This is not a new problem. They place no value on anything. What kind of programs replace parenting. Ask a parent Stephanie and they will tell there isn't one. You do not need to be a parent to realize that children with out them have little hope. Look at San Francisco they have made great strides in removing there ghetto population through means that are disguised as something else. But the result is the same. There crime that is related to ghetto people has dropped off
significantly. You complain about how much the Police cost the city but you never complain about who the police are servicing all the time. With all do respect I see you as a muck raker. Twisting issues for your own political gain. What have you really done to make Vallejo a better place to live. And don't tell me you painted over some graffiti.

Hmmmm, that does not look at all like Gomes, but anyway....I find it ironic that the same person that declared we don't have a crime problem in Vallejo, NOW wants feedback from the public. Where have you been for the last FEW YEARS? I can see why she does not want any more finger pointing, all the fingers are pointing at her. In my opinion, she is a lost cause. Marti Brown is our last hope for some type of leadership. Gomes has alienated herself from the Police with her rude remarks and at times ridiculous, juvenile behavior.
The Mayor is obviously a joke. If this was a black man beaten by
another race, he and his sheep/followers would be up in arms (especially if it was a group of gay folks that committed these acts). Apparently, since it was black youth that did this, the Mayor cannot be bothered. Great leadership Mayor!! We obviously got the wrong guy!
