At this point I have had many conversations with firemen. They have, on the whole, been pleasant and respectful. While we disagree on some points, we all agree that layoffs would be an unfortunate act of last resort. We also agree that they deserve to be well paid.
The most common comment I have heard from firefighters at this sort of politico-gastronomic event is "Well, the Union wants us to be here." Clearly, they are just following orders.
So, friends, lets again draw a distinction between the dedicated fire professionals who bring excellent service to Vallejo (from whatever far flung regions they originate) and the Union that represents them.
The Union is tenaciously clinging to a contract that is just plain terrible for Vallejo. It was written and ratified in expectation of potential future revenue that didn't yet exist.
A previous City Manager made the mistake of counting his chickens before they hatched. A deadly and stupid error. Or one that was the result of political pressure.
Let's not forget that Unions are not just about workers' rights. They are political animals as well. This one is a real Jackal. And very well funded.
Lubricating the wheels of Government with a little cash is a tried and true method of making things go your way.
The more cash, the more things go your way. An unfortunate political truism.
What we are witnessing is nothing less than THE BATTLE for control of OUR CITY.
That control should rest with the Citizens and the Officials WE elect to represent US.
Union bought Government is no longer welcome in Vallejo.
Think About It!!
