BROWN WILL NOT RUN

6/28/13

The following statement has been issued by Vallejo Councilmember Marti Brown:

It is with a heavy heart and sadness that I announce I will not seek re-election to the Vallejo City Council in 2013.

After months of thoughtful consideration, I've realized that I cannot fully engage in the civic and political life of Vallejo while maintaining a full-time position in Sacramento as the Executive Director of the North Franklin District Business Association, a non-profit corporation.

I am unable to provide the intense focus, time and attention to the immediate needs of the citizens of Vallejo while also managing the competing demands and expectations of the 600 business owners and 150 plus property owners that I serve and represent 60 miles away. And I do not want to disappoint and sell short either community.

The City of Vallejo is at yet another crossroads--a bright and beautiful future filled with hope and possibility. And as it moves toward its next evolutionary phase, Vallejo needs elected leaders
who can dedicate the time and energy to ensure its successful renaissance, as well as do the necessary homework to make the right decisions and move the city forward.

And I cannot.

It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve you. And I will continue to serve our community in other capacities.

I look forward to our ongoing journey together to improve Vallejo as we create the city that we all want to call home--a safe and thriving community of pride and dignity.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and our community.

When all of your candidates are defeated I wonder if you will dismiss it with "whatever"?
Anonymous   |July.03.2013
whatever...
you dont know jack   |July.03.2013
You don't know jack. Thankfully yet ironically your banned nemesis Sam Kurshan's bringing attention to the destruction VIB has wrought upon Vallejo has brought more people to this website along with their negative opinions of VIB and their council members and candidates.
If you think some of these anti Marti anti VIB remarks are crass then go to topix and see what some of your resident trolls post day in and day out about Kurshan an anyone else who dares to state their opinion about VIB. Your sandbox is sacred no more.

i find it interesting that some people feel it necessary to post insulting, juvenile comments on this thread. obviously, they have strong feelings about marti. apparently they lack the ability to express those emotions and thoughts in an adult and articulate way. i'm glad that marti has the intelligence to consider the source. she could never have accomplished all she has in her life if she let this kind of nonsense affect her.

Thank you for you very kind words, accolades, and appreciation for my service to the City of Vallejo.

And thank you for your support and understanding with regards to my announcement that I will not seek re-election to the Vallejo City Council this year.

I am both humbled and inspired by all of you, your thoughtful messages and your work to move the city in a positive direction.

I look forward to our continued work together to improve our city. Again, thank you.

Thank you Marti. Your reasoned, intelligent and thoughtful contributions will be missed on the dais. I'll be seeing you at the podium.
Enemies   |July.01.2013
A person can be known by the friends he keeps but can also be known by the enemies he has.

Who is Marty's enemies? and now you know where she stands.

Thank you.
Good Riddance Marti   |July.01.2013
Marti, you are the biggest wasted opportunity Council Member in the history of Vallejo. You accomplished nothing. Cut and run. VIB strong woman NOT!

Don't let the door hit you on the way out!

Marti had an opportunity and she squandered it. The so called VIB strong women NOT have had over sixteen years in office collectively, from Schively, to Gomes to Brown and they have nothing to speak of in the form of any positive accomplishments for Vallejo. The VIB political regime destroyed itself when it scapegoated our hard working public safety employees in what is primarily a blue collar town. Any
and all VIB candidates in November will be defeated by a slate of candidates whose only interest is in bringing more revenue and more public safety to Vallejo. Something that VIB has blocked and destroyed. Now the voters will destroy VIB. We have had enough!

I've been a supporter of Marti's, but she's lost herself in the weeds lately. Did you hear her the other night on the budget? All she cared about was participatory budgeting. They had an entire budget with millions of dollars of income and expenses, PERS nightmares, a deficit, and the only thing she seemed interested in talking about was "PB." She didn't seem interested in cops, potholes, code enforcement, economic development, etc. She was too focused on her "legacy" and not on the city.

Happy about PB, disappointed in Marti's loss of the big picture.
Anonymous   |June.30.2013
Um, Marti "single handedly" brought participatory budgeting to Vallejo? Hmmmm, last I heard it needed four council members to vote on it, not just one.

Good riddance hag!
Vallejo Dreaming   |June.30.2013
Not having been interested in local politics until recently I can't say anything negative about Marti Brown. having said that it would seem more then a few people seem to think Marti would make the mayor's office better. After 4 years in Vallejo any change to the Office Of Mayor would be a good one at this point. Perhaps the people of Vallejo should consider drafting Ms. Brown as candidate for Mayor in the next mayoral election.

Best news in years!

Vallejo Voter, what rock have you been under? Brown has created a legacy of excellent ideas. You sound like HWSNBN commenting on the times horrid -- or maybe bitter Anna -- neither of you who've done squat for Vallejo.

Brown single-handedly brought PB to Vallejo, and the council the other night voted UNANIMOUSLY to continue PB with measure b funds through fiscal year 17-18.

Vallejo got above the fold front page good news coverage in the Chron for PB.

Thank you for all that you have done. I know I speak for the rest of us who appreciate the personal sacrifice you have made of your time. We wish you the best and look forward to your input and presence in civic participation in the future. May your life be filled with smiles from Individuals that acknowledge your work and appreciate your personal sacrifice. Thank you for your service to this community.

Marti, In the short time you've been a leader in Vallejo politics (even though it may seem a long time to you) you have brought sense and sensibility to the podium. I'm in awe of the strength it takes to be a public figure, especially one who is creative, and actually cares about what is in the best interest of those you represent. Thank You for ALL that you have done, and will do. Onward
Incredible legacy   |June.29.2013
There's a phrase that "you're known by the company you keep," and in that light, Vallejo has been extremely fortunate to have attracted Marti to our public life.

Her efforts in championing Participatory Budgeting show world-class leadership and vision; I can only hope that her absence from Vallejo's civic life is temporary. Mayor Marti has a very nice ring to it -- she would be incredible in that role.

Our gratitude to you, Marti. We'll be patient about you stepping away, but please don't stay away too long. We need you!

Oops. Vallejo,s economy is under water.
Anonymous   |June.29.2013
Thanks Marti -and one more thing please! Could we adopt a resolution to limit Public Safety salaries to 60% of the general fund. You did say we have a structural problem.... Dan Keen is opposed to the idea but it is something that can be done. The fix we currently have is not a fix at all. We are simply going into debt and kicking the problem down the road. The economy of the world is on thin ice and safety unions are ice breakers. Vallejos roomy is under water...

Marti had an opportunity and she squandered it. Personal attacks and name calling of me doesn't change that. Mardi...

You will be missed!!!! Your Participatory Budgeting project engendered a lot of positive community spirit and positive national press (for once). Thank you for starting that and asking the hard questions that keep exposing the nefarious underbelly of City Hall. May you live long and prosper!!

malgappo is nothing compared to other candidates that are running. summers, the storefront minister, and pippin may have more in common than people realize.

avatar Thank you for your service Marti, you demonstrate extreme sensitivity to moral and ethical values that every potential council candidate and member should also share. Unfortunately there is our Mayor, the council minority, and upcoming council candidates that could care less about the voters they are sworn to represent.

Can you hear me Ozzie....the Queen of bankruptcy Verde Aliga, and MalGuapo that have yet to make and keep real commitments to the taxpayers and not unions and special interests?

Yes, well done Councillor. You have been articulate and, most importantly, established a role model for serving the entire community.

In the current day political environment, not a small or insignificant accomplishment. IMO.

Best wishes.
