"Silence the Violence-- Increase the Peace"

10 AM, Saturday December 20, 2008  Several hundred Vallejoans gathered in City Park under the bright winter sun for a somber occasion...a Peace March to honor and commemorate the life and untimely murder of Jonathan Paul Brunson approximately three weeks ago. Brunson was killed in front of his barber shop at the corner of Georgia and Marin Streets in downtown Vallejo. "Silence the Violence Increase the Peace" was the chant as marchers walked from the park to Georgia St.

“This is not the end, it is only the beginning.” said Marco McCleod, Brunson's cousin and the organizer of the event.

Among those present were Mayor Osby Davis, councilmember Stephanie Gomes and councilmember Tom Bartee.

“Let's really take our city back, not with words, but with deeds.” said Mayor Davis when he took the podium.

Brunson's fiancee Michelle Hermann promised that “Paul's memory will not go in vain.”

Also present were members of The Vallejo Guardian Angels. Oakland Chapter leader Cristina Hernandez expressed her anger over Brunson's murder. The incident occurred shortly after the Angels had left patrol in the area.

Others asked “What kind of Vallejo do we want for our children ?”

Those present were asked to sign a pledge to combat violence:

I value my own life, recognizing that the lack of self identity and hope for the future lay at the roots of all violence.

I will reach beyond my limitation, taking concrete steps each day to uncover my real potential. I will never give up on my dreams, even if they seem impossible. I will respect all life, recognizing that violence comes in many forms. I will not isolate myself, but will create an environment where others can be comfortable and can be themselves. I will see beyond superficial differences and reflect on my own behavior. I will inspire hope in others. With courage, I will resolutely stand up against violence, be it verbal, physical or passive, and teach others through my own example. I will support others and encourage them to follow their dreams.
