FLASH--Mare Island Studios

project moves forward

A familiar face returns to Vallejo.

12/7/10--Tonight the Vallejo City Council unanimously approved moving forward with an tanner_blu.jpgERN or Exclusive Right to Negotiate with Mare Island Studios, LLC for the purchase of some 160 acres on the North end of Mare Island. Present at the meeting was studio chairwoman Carissa Carpenter and former Vallejo City Manager Joe Tanner. Tanner is acting as a consultant for the studio and helping guide negotiations with the city.

At this point, Mare Island Studios, LLC will begin the process of looking at environmental considerations, design, architecture and budgeting etc. necessary to move the project forward. Mr. Tanner has a reputation for his expertise in development, something he had little opportunity to use in his contentious tenure as City Manager. It will indeed be interesting to see the role he plays as this project moves forward. Maybe seeing Tanner around City Hall will be Deja Vu...but in a good way. More detail in Your City Council Report soon!

On tonight's city council agenda there is a discussion regarding the price and terms of payment for land on the north end of Mare Island for a movie studio.

It's still early in the process...but it would be nice if Vallejo could catch a break !

So, we took to the streets to see what folks thought about the idea !

OK: Mare Island Studios builds facilities and in 5 years they take off for China or wherever. For 5 years (or even one) Mare Island is abuzz, building is taking place, maybe some movie making.

Or, we say no to Mare Island Studios and we get nothing, the empty Navy buildings stay empty (unless the naysayers here have some great business ideas?)

And if its a casino, I'd take 5 years of a movie studio than 100 years of a casino.

Why the "huge" investment? Does it need to have a better foundation and strength than the old Marine barracks?

One thing is for sure, any building on the north end is going to require a huge investment. There isn't some hanger they can simply move into. Soil tests, remediation, pile driving. And if they're gone in 5 years, for the 5 they're here, lets show them how great this town is. Maybe they'll be offshoot businesses. Just don't build a casino!

I'd suggest we find out what happened with Disney's animation group over in Marin at Hamilton. They bought up the last hangar & the control tower building with great fanfare--2 years later Disney is GONE!

This kind of movie 'studio' is based on computers, which means it is VERY susceptible to outsourcing & offshoring. This kind of modern film work is leaving Hollywood and going to India & China & Taiwan. Remember--anything that is done on a computer can be done anywhere in the world, and for less cost. That is why going after computer-based businesses is a BAD idea--they simply won't be
around next year or five years from now.

"We don't need another Six Flags"

Six flags is a "fixed" capital intensive business, in other words they had to build a lot of stuff in Vallejo that could not be easily relocated if Vallejo screwed up or made increasing tax demands while supplying fewer services.

The Studio on the other hand, while bringing higher skilled workers most likely would be able to close up shop in short order if Vallejo tried to milk them.

The Studio and the low profit ship breaking probably mean Vallejo will need to be bailed out or default on some of its obligations at some point in the future
as they will not produce the excess tax revenues above service costs Vallejo needs. Police, fire, and other government dependents should make plans now, because later is too late.
Great video!   |December.08.2010
It would be great for a Studio to open up on Mare Island! Most of the jobs would be highly skilled positions specific to the industry. The jobs would probably pay very well since industry standards are high in this field. The past few years scale has plummeted however some have managed to retain good rates. I hope this comes to Vallejo. Vallejo needs to encourage more business.

To Trampky - I hope for gods sake that it IS what you say it is. We don't need another Six Flags with their two-bit jobs. A production studio will bring real jobs. No Universal Studios!

Thank you Marc & Diana - I enjoyed the video, what a great bunch of folks we have here in VJO! Thanks for highlighting them!
2 B Or Not 2 B   |December.07.2010
There is no not... we need the movie industry to realize the potential we have on Mare Island. I'm sending up good thoughts to the hope Goddess. Thanks to all that contributed to this welcome video. Big hugs to Marc and Diana for putting this together. You rock!

I hope no one thinks this is going to be like Universal City. It is more like a dozen indistinguishable production studios in Burbank. It's a good project, great for Mare Island & Vallejo, but most of it will be holding server banks, computer workstations & blue-screen frames.
Love it!   |December.07.2010
You are all so creative. Very glad this was not some Chamber of Commerce production but real people. Funny, sassy and wise with all color and styles - just like Vallejo.

Extra added points for having Better Vallejo and Moschetti in there.

Marc, you and the others who collaborated on this video are a God-send to Vallejo. Kudos! Vallejo is so ready for something good to happen to this town.
CRRAAAZY   |December.07.2010
I am very hopeful this will bring much needed jobs and revenue to Vallejo! Thank goodness they didn't interview Vallejo's village idiot (Yes you Sam) for this video. That in itself would kill the deal. Great video and keepin my fingers crossed for Vallejo!
Someone Else   |December.07.2010
That cracked me up. Thanks Marc.

Bring on the studio!
Doug   |December.07.2010
Yes to the Movie Studio. VERY nice production Marc!
Kim   |December.07.2010
They need to make it happen at any cost.
