10/7/11 -- We go on about how important schools are. Yet when I talk to folks who are supposedly politically savvy...they usually make some comment like "So, who is running for school board anyhow?" (Tony Ubalde and Robert DaPrato...Ace Stewart and Raymond Victor Mommensen are unopposed.)
Bottom line: Sit down, shut up, buckle your seatbelt put on your big boy/girl panties and watch this thing so you can be informed.
I had to go there, film this and edit it so YOU gotta watch it. That's the deal.
But in all seriousness..the schools are important and this latest masterpiece from VIB-SPAN (You know..like C-SPAN but different) is actually pretty informative.
P.S. There were sadly only about 12 people total in the audience ...decent forum nonetheless.
P.P.S I apologize in advance that the picture is not so sharp...but it was dead dark in there and I had to crank the gain up waaay past what the human eye can see (ISO 12,800 or so)
Exactly. Kumon and similar for profit outfits are a very poor substitute for a broad liberal education.....even for those who "get" the lock-step method to English/math.
There is no substitute for a well trained inspirational educator who understands the varying needs and learning styles of children.

Mr. Kumon is very dry learning. Not every child gets Kumon.
The homeschool charters now have long waiting lists of Vallejo families ready to join.
I am curious to hear how many students VCUSD lost since last year because of the school closures. And now VCUSD wants to close more schools. Who wants to send their kids to overcrowded schools?
PS Stanford and other universities highly consider homeschoolers.

If I was in charge of public education in Vallejo, this is what I would do:
1. I would strike a special Committee composed of all the School Board and Senior Adminstration to investigate the community feelings over a specific set time frame. I would do this through highly publicized meetings at each school to elicit the thoughts, feelings and opinions of parents and interested persons. It would be purposefully intense and emotional and very public. This would be an initial fact finding phase prior to instituting a comprehensive overhaul of local education.
The guiding principles for this data gathering would be the goals of creating a safe and effective learning environment for all students.
2. I would convene a number of meetings with the Board and Senior Administration to focus on the concerns and ideas of school administrators, seeking their collective and individual input regarding issues that prevent schools from creating a safe environment. Again, fact finding phase within a specific time frame.
3. I would convene meetings at individual schools with the School Board and teachers, seeking their input into concerns and ideas for creating a safe and effective learning environment.
4. Second Stage- An Action Plan-I would convene meetings/workshops that included parent organizations, teachers, and administrators, including Board memebers and senior admin to develop an action plan that reexamines physical safety and pedagogical approaches that can be implemented comprehensively and relevant to grades.
The point of all this is to create a climate of cooperation and a learning environment that is safe and effective through the INCLUSIVENESS of all education partners.
That would be my idea of a Board the leads and a Senior Administration that is dedicated to an understanding of transformational leadership.
There is still a lot of talent in the school district. It need to be harnessed with enthusiasm.

What would it cost to enroll all 15,500 students in Kumon?

Wow, these two know nothing.
I didn't think it was possible, but between the new superintendent, most of our current board and these two, our district is going to get worse.

OMG.....doesn't have quite the same perfume that municipal elections emit....but the two candidates do little to elevate the debate in public education...unfortunately both display a great capacity to laud their personal interests and accomplishments without displaying much in the way of understanding their role as trustee or their ability to shape education policy that will facilitate a safe and effective learning environment......sadly the questions directed to them dont lead in that direction.
