Vallejo discussed on Calpensions website. Article by Ed Mendel reflects on Vallejo bankruptcy and the role of CalPers. Also touches on the AB 506 legislation and quotes Vallejo Councilmember Stephanie Gomes. HERE
1/8/12 --Yesterday the Vallejo Youth Commission dedicated the mural they have completed on the corner of Marin and Georgia Sts. The name and theme of the mural is Vallejo Rising and is intended to represent rebirth as well as to commemorate Paul Brunson, who owned the adjacent barber shop and lost his life in a shooting in 2008.
Note: Missed comments by Osby Davis and Marti Brown because I was late, but they were both at the event earlier.
As we can see from Yelp, an alley of murals (some good and some not so good) could be a good thing.
Since we have so many artist in this area, can we figure out a way to give them some public space to show their talent?
Maybe we can figure out a system/arrangement that will attract artists not just in our city but from the region as well?
e.g. we can set up a web site (VallejoAlley..)that provides a place for the background of each mural and the artist for the world to see. We just set up the system and the artist can choose to upload content/picture or not ...nothing rigid..
Just a thought.

Let's give people the benefit of doubt.
Maybe most of the people are not aware of the Clarion Alley project so it is not like they knew about it but choose to do it a different way. We can always do differently in the future.
Also I like to think mural not as permanent fixture. It is more of a canvas for artist to express themselves and have a chance to show it to the public. As murals in Clarion alley are often painted over (or even tagged) so you see new ones often. It is not a dead display of some painting done months/years ago.
I will be interested to know what is the system for them to assign spaces to different groups.

The Clarion Alley is a wonderful idea. Too bad our city leader(s) did not take that as a model instead of putting it smack dab in the middle of downtown. Indian Alley would be perfect.

I like the balance between mural and public space shown in Clarion Alley project in the Mission district of SF.

People working together to do something for the city is always a good thing but some people like the color/contents and some don't.
Also visual-wise, does it go well with the historical neighborhood?
I see a better model in Clarion Alley project where people have to seek them out to see them. It is not in your face.
Also, there are so many artist working in Clarion alley so there is no dominating mural. And due to the democratic nature of the set up, we can have less control/approval on the contents and it will work better for all.
The last time Vallejo put a city leader involved to complete a mural...they didn't want to take direction from the muralist who actually painted many murals. They bought rollers and paint from Kelly Moore to refurbish a mural and they wanted done in one day. My point is some councilmembers do not trust anyone who are outside their little circle so they put their handpicked people (who are easily influenced) in charge to oversee project. Unfortunately, they are inexperienced. Also department heads (a female) do not like to be told what to do even when they do not know what they are doing. Vallejo leaders have no clue about public art. Finally the muralist got tired of arguing with the inedpt people put in charge to oversee of these so called mural projects which is why he started emailing the City Attorney rahter than argue with someone who doesn't want to learn.
It looks as if Vallejo got it's act together on this mural, perhaps the other mural would have went better if Councilmember Gomes was in charge...I don't know. Enought of the other mural..because this is very nice mural.

Before anymore murals go up anywhere there should be a better attempt at public input. Location, alternate images ect. I personally preferred a clean fresh wall. The mural resembles organized graffitti. It took a lot of effort, time and talent but good intentions do not trump a mediocre product

so don't try to spin this on the last artist did do it right...he did and we have emails to prove it. It was you guys, the leaders, who didn't know what they were doing.

I didn't slam this mural. It's a great mural....I'm one of the muralist of the other one and artist did get permission from the previous owner...Ask Ms. Waterman!!! we also gave leaders a book about the laws of public art...i.e. painting over them. The La Pinata mural was two years old. It's a shame Vallejo took the grant money from State Farm and than 2 years later painted over the mural. The new owner made mistake for white-washing the mural and the City didn't care. This will all be addressed soon!
The La Pinata mural was done very cheap just to get a mural project started. In fact, a similiar mural of the La Pinata was just painted near the Mi Pueblo in San Rafael.
La Pinata mural doesn't have to be in Vallejo...The owner has every right to paint over it but the owner should at least showed an attempt to contact the artist so that he could have at least petition the communitiy to keep the mural. It was a community mural! The La Pinate mural featured the Virgin Guadalupe (also Madonna of humility) over Vallejo's family crest, along with a silhoute(sp?) of Mare Island Naval shipyard.
I just wished someone in Vallejo cared a little...that's all.

Murals are great. They brighten the city and in my opinion they should be allowed, encouraged, and all over the damn place. Durring the time I was near or looking at the mural downtown what I and my son saw was a small crowd standing around it smoking out. Get stoned and paint, okay. Be cool about it and no problem. At least step around the back to fire up. Have some respect. Just because your painting the block does not mean that you own it. Am I wrong in that concern? Hell, I smoke, do art too. But I know better than to set up on the public sidewalk and work and get high at the same time for all to see.

Because "a politician" spearheaded the project, she made sure there was a contract in place that addressed the issues with the muralist and the building owner. The sourpuss adults crying about the other mural didn't do the same thing, obviously. Their mistake. Why slam this mural because they did it right? The Youth Commission also spearheaded this project, and that's what we want in Vallejo, for our youth to be engaged. Yet some people just want to spread negativity and rain on their parade. How pathetic.

Why any negative comments?
A hard working school teacher (and excellent artist, Mr. Garcia has his work in world famous museums!) and others, give their time, talent and energy to create a beautiful mural, then a few silly bitter trolls come here to post their negativity? Go play somewhere else! Bravo to Mr. Garcia, Mr. Harold Beaulieu and the others who volunteered their time and talent!

It's good to know that Martii Brown and Osby Davis were also there.Communication in it's highest sense is community. This communal work of art is a perfect expression of that bond that lifts us all.

Because this mural was spearheaded by a politician, there will be no worries of it being white-washed.

What a wonderful project! Thank you Youth Commission and Councilmember Gomes for spearheading the concept and making it come to fruition! And thank you Marc for capturing it all on video.

Buy some paint by number kits and you can have all that type of art you want.

So ghetto. A drug dealer gets shot and a crappy inner city graffiti mural is painted in his behalf.

A nice positive story. Sometimes, when one sees a litany of bad acts and when it seems that Vallejo is awash with dysfunctional creatures, a clip like this is a reminder that there are some very good people in the community commanding less press, but who are far more powerful in the long run. IMO.
