VPD Standoff & Fatal Shooting

3/20/13 -- Here are clips from the standoff between  a man (described as white and around 60) who pointed a gun at police from a house on the corner of Illinois and Sutter. The standoff apparently began shortly after noon when the man, brandishing a shotgun fired at police.  Police returned fire and apparently killed the man, who according to neighbors was known as "Bobbie" and "helped fix cars." The man was likely already dead inside the house from gunshot wounds when police called on him to come out and surrender.

Intro clip courtesy of Victor Johnson, who was present when gunfire was being exchanged.**See police press release below indicating suspect did not fire at police.

Vallejo Police
Press Release
Lieutenant Lee Horton
VPD Press Information Officer
March 20, 2013
Officer Involved Fatal Incident/Shooting
1800 Block of Sutter St
VPD Case 13-03199
(Officers Not Injured)

On Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at 1136 hours, the Vallejo Police Department received calls that a man in the 1800 Block of Sutter Street was pointing a rifle or shotgun at people on the street. Vallejo officers arrived and the man retreated back into a residence in the 1800 block of Sutter. Officers began surrounding the house and setting up a perimeter in the area.

The department deployed an armored vehicle to the scene and parked it in front of the residence. Officers took cover around the armored vehicle and at other strategic locales in front of the house.

The Vallejo Police Hostage Negotiation Team responded and established phone contact with the suspect who was still inside the house. The Vallejo SWAT Team was also dispatched to the scene. The suspect was hostile and made threats to kill the officers, himself, or someone else. There were numerous people gathering on the streets to watch what was happening.

Officers summoned mutual aid from surrounding agencies to assist in securing the area and clearing people out of harm's way.

The suspect began making demands and said he would kill someone if his demands were not met.

At approximately 1316 hrs, the suspect jammed his shotgun through a window at the front of the house. He broke the glass with the shotgun and extended it at the officers on the street. Several officers recognized the threat and responded by discharging their firearms at the suspect. The suspect then disappeared out of view and back into the residence.

The Vallejo/Benicia SWAT Team and the Solano Sheriff SWAT Team arrived to take control of the tactical operation. The SWAT Teams deployed gas to force the suspect out with no response from the suspect.

The SWAT Teams were preparing to introduce a SWAT robot into the house when they were able to see the suspect down just inside the window of the house. There was a shotgun next to the man. An ambulance was on standby in the area and was summoned to the scene; however, the man was deceased at the scene from an apparent gun shot wound.

There were no officers or civilians injured in this incident.

The Vallejo Police Department initiated the Solano County Fatal Incident Protocol in coordination with the Solano County District Attorney's Office and Coroner's Office.

The department is withholding the suspect's identity pending notification of next of kin.
