Ethicalego (Kenneth Brooks) discusses current events from a critical thinking perspective rarely expressed elsewhere

Paula Deen and American culture of racism

By Kenneth Brooks

6/29/2013

Paula Deen is a southern food cooking specialist, writer, and host of "Paula's Home Cooking" on the Food Network. She admitted in a legal deposition using the N-racist-slur long ago. In addition, she admitted allowing racial slurs in the workplace and quoting workers remarks with N-racial-slur in them. The Food Network and other business declined to renew her contract. Now Deen and many defenders protest the strong response against her remarks is unfair. However, she reaped the product of her racist seeding.

A main defense for Deen, born in Georgia in 1947, is that she is the product of the racist social environment of the South characterized by ideas of white supremacy and racial oppression. In other words, she entered adulthood unaware of higher moral standards for conduct. I reject this self-serving argument. The American States approved the Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776 about 200 years before her adulthood. It set out principles of human equality and rights of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness that were self-evident to reasoning and moral people. Deen could have embraced those reasoning and moral principles.

True, from goals of greediness, most founders did support racism and savagery of slavery in the Constitution. However, the United States fought a Civil War to preserve the Union. Afterward, it approved the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution in 1865 that outlawed slavery. The Fourteenth Amendment in 1868 secured equality of treatment for all natural-born and naturalized citizens without consideration of race. The rebelling states agreed to abide by the new constitutional amendments as a condition of rejoining the Union. Many of them accepted the benefits of reinstated American citizenship and then reneged on their oath to treat all citizens equally under the law.

Many people in the South wanted vengeance for their Civil War defeat. They lacked the courage and means to seek it against the American government leaders or American Army that had weaponry to fight back. Instead, they subjected Freed Americans to a culture of racism and terrorism as surrogates for Northern leaders. This harsh culture of racial oppression included language of belittlement that attacked the emotions and self-image of Freed Americans. This culture of revenge compelled Freed Americans to act submissively in the presence of a white-race-labeled person or face physical attack, arrest, mutilation, or death for noncompliance.

Only a contradiction of logic supported this surrogacy for culpability. "Without weapons, political power, or economic power, Freed Americans of an inferior black race caused the humiliating defeat of superior white-race Southerners." Therefore, to gain satisfaction from taking vengeance on the surrogates, those Southern rebels had to ignore the inconsistency of their assertions and convince themselves of Freed Americans' blameworthiness.

Self-deception requires people to give emotion control over reason. Southerners dispensed with reason and convinced themselves they were victims of Freed Americans' actions with the potential for more harm. They reacted with an 85-year reign of terror (about 1880 to 1965) on Freed Americans in the South inclusive of lynching, burning at the stake, maiming, dismemberment, castration, and other brutal methods of physical torture. "N-racial-slur" was the label for their victims and is the word that expresses this attitude of permissive cruelty and hatred.

Those are the ideas Deen and others evoke and support when they utter "N-racial-slur." However, she and her supporters trivialize the history of cruelty and inhumanity it symbolizes with the defense that she is the victim of political correctness and intolerance for an honest mistake of saying it. Deen's defenders also claim a double standard, because, "Black people call one another N-racial-slur all the time." They contend that society should not hold Deen accountable for past conduct, because she apologized for it.

Deen had a choice of moral standards. She chose to venerate a period in history of degenerate American racism and cruelty. I will not give Deen a pass for her conduct based on an apology, because I do not believe in apology. An apology is only an assertion of new values or conclusions and promise of different future conduct. No matter its sincerity, an apology does not change the effects of intentional bad conduct. An apology for accidental events of which the person had no discretion is meaningless.

Race is a social construction in America and the foundation for racism. Nevertheless, the emotional and financial costs to the targets of racism are real. "N-racial-slur" is a verbal assault of belittlement that causes emotional distress in people susceptible to it. Some people display confusion or emotional damage from assault of racism by referring to themselves as N-racial-slur in the degrading language of their tormentors. I liken them to people that engage in self-injury like cutting themselves. It is an unhealthy way to cope with emotional pain, intense anger, and frustration. Nevertheless, no rational or moral person presumes an equal right to inflict more harm on someone that engages in self-injury.

I never heard of Paula Deen before this accusation of racism confirmed by her remarks and conduct. Nevertheless, I am pleased to see public condemnation of this conduct as an effective way to end expressions of bigotry. Laws alone will not effect change so long as most Americans support bigotry by their silence.

I do not suggest that racism is common only in the South or that only the people in the defeated Southern states were responsible for the reign of violence and intimidation of Freed Americans. I suspect America's national leaders permitted it to happen as a catharsis for post-Civil War tensions among white-race-labeled Americans. They had to recognize the culture of savagery in their midst. After all, during the 85 years of post-Civil War cruelty, the United States defeated Nazi Germany in World War II to uncover and prevent Nazi Holocaust of Jews and other Europeans the Nazi classified as not Aryans. Nevertheless, United States' leaders allowed prolonged acts of racial cruelty and death to continue in the South with impunity for the torturers, murderers, and assaulters for at least another two decades after fighting a war to stop similar conduct in Europe.

Much too much collateral damage around this issue. Virtually every race of people will pay a heavy price for Paula's mouth. Those of you who have friends and family at the Meyer Corporation in Vallejo and Fairfield must be very concerned....
This response is hurting many innocent victims
who in my opinion should be considered and protected. I sure wish Mr.Brooks would use his good mind to suggest a sane way of dealing with racism in all forms that doesn't disenfranchise the very same people so hurt by Deen's comments. My intention is not to criticize anything that Mr. Brooks has written
but rather to request that he address these additional concerns .....

That's right. Paula Dean N-word...upheaval. Alec Baldwin gay slur...nothing. Mayor Davis gay comment...upheaval. Notice the pattern here? If you're a white "liberal" male, nothing happens. If you're either a white "conservative" woman or black "conservative" male, big problem. Of course Alec Baldwin gets a pass...he's from Sillywood, where GLAAD

Lisa Jackson, the former restaurant manager embroiled in a legal battle against Paula Deen and her brother Bubba Hiers, says that the lawsuit she put forward against the celebrity chef was never about racism. In response to a severe blowback ignited by comments Deen made during depositions, Jackson issued a statement saying that her issue with Deen centers over her disrespect and degradation of people that she deems to be inferior.

The lawsuit has never been about the N-word, Jackson said in a statement, published by WEWS News Channel5.

That is not the issue. Prove it. She did not admit to racism in her restraunt or get in trouble for the wedding theme. She got in trouble for using the N- word after a black male put a gun to her head.

re: tell me people aren't racist.

No, I am not going to tell you that because people are racist.

No need to go far, just look at Vallejo.

Case 1: VCUSD has built in un-equal expectation. After equal opportunity, equal this and equal that, certain group of students are not expected to act to the acceptable behavior standard. The have a different set of standards. Unfortunately, their standards are not higher but lower.

Case 2: We had several cop-involved suicides in this city. Have you noticed that whenever a certain group was committing the suicide, all of a sudden, the cop became the
murderer?

Yes, people are racist.

Racism is not going to be fixed by more legislation and such. As long as there is no rampant unfairness, we should just let things work out by themselves.

Respect has to be earned not legislated.

A white guy steals a bicycle and no one reports him, people just walk on past. A black guy and people are shouting a calling the cops.

Until the white guy is treated like the black guy racism will be a problem in this country. To pretend that black racism is worse is a deflection at best.

Very well said rocketman, I agree.

The most vicious and immoral crime today is the continued patronizing and subsidizing of the black population. Blacks are being treated like farm animals, held in large urban herds that are rounded up and driven to the polls to cast democrat ballots.

What a crime against the human spirit.
rocketman   |July.05.2013
It is quite unfortunate that the writer here discusses ONLY what I will describe as white racism, but the FACT is that black racism--the diminution of white people by blacks--is the rampant form from which this nation suffers today. And Paula Deen is only the most recent, most publicly visible victim--and I do mean that quite literally--victim of black racism. AND of white apologia for NOTHING.

The fact is that America has been compelled into a de facto reparations program based, falsely, on the old history of slavery in America. What it really represents is an enormous scam played on the
American people to funnel money from white Americans into the pockets of the black community and, more importantly, into the pockets of black so-called leaders who find it personally profitable to perpetuate the alleged victimization of blacks by white racism well into the 21st century, even while there is a black President (well, he's half-black perhaps), a black Attorney General, a black national security advisor, following a black Secretary of State and a black Secretary of Defense.

Let's be clear about this--America has been under the sway of black racism for decades now. This has been a
known fact for some time, the white apologists and fools notwithstanding.

But those who know all this, who consider all this, are quite sick of all this. The phony proclamation of offense at criticism of blacks by any white person, the phony alarm at the superficial crime statistics and prison population numbers that reveal a fundamental truth, the thinly veiled but absurd presumption that all of this is the result of white racism.

The perpetuation of this fallacious cultural tale has done--and continues to do--a great disservice to ALL American, including and particularly to black
Americans. The age of accommodation and patronization of black Americans must be brought to a quick end--now.

That doesn't explain tolerating racism at her restaurants. Or wanting a plantation themed wedding for her brother in 2007.

Just because someone has learned it not appropriate to use certain words doesn't mean they aren't racist.

And I still don't get why people get caught up with the "if they can, why can't I" argument for that word. Does that mean I can call you a jack*$$ if you call yourself that or use it occasionally? Because that's your argument.

EE: Deen had a choice of moral standards. She chose to venerate a period in history of degenerate American racism and cruelty.

Does anybody really think Dean was pondering her "choice" as she described what she was feeling having a gun held to her head by a black man perpetrating a bank robbery? During her recounting the incident of the possibility of having her brains blown out should she have been aware that she might be about to "venerate period in history"? I think not.

I had a very interesting experience in community college. I enrolled in the class of Dr. Joe Jackson, who unknown to me whs a very hip and athletic AA gentlemen who was in his early 50's but looked very young for his age at best 30's. He ran track during his lunch break and was seen on campus in track gear. On my first day of class, I always sit in the first or second row of the classroom, so I could see the caulk board, I am a bit near sighed. Dr. Jackson taught English Lit. Apparently the college football team were very interested in English Lit, because they took up the entire two back
rows of the classroom.

When Dr. Jackson entered the classroom on the first day of class, many shouts went out from the last back row "hey coach!" The jocks had mistaken Dr. Jackson for a coach as he looked very young, very hip and ran track at lunch.

Dr. Jackson pointed to the back rows of the classroom and said "good morning sirs, you will be flunking this class if you choose to stay."

Lots of profiling goes on, even between the races, as you may have guessed, the last two back rows were mostly AA jocks.

@ Opened Can of Worms: The argument Paula Deens lawyers advanced is the legal principle of STANDING, or I should say, lack of standing by the plaintiff who filed the racial discrimination lawsuit against Deen. In the Deen case, the plaintiff is white, and claims she felt uncomfortable and upset hearing the racial slurs at Deen's restaurant by owners/managers/employees. The STANDING principle is a critical issue in Federal Jurisprudence. Deen's lawyers are arguing that a person who is not directly harmed lacks standing because of feeling bad that others were harmed. I don't know how
the courts will rule on that issue, but the Deen lawyers are not using the demise of the discriminatory Prop 8 law in California to advance their argument, but the centuries old federal legal principle of STANDING.

It does appear the significant elements of the black community in America learned certain things from Jim Crow--separate is preferable to integrated. George Wallace and Bull Conner were their teachers, and they learned well. But separate and superior became their prayer. And black racism is the order of the day in America while they project their own racism onto everything and everyone else in America.

so let Us research the evolution of the "word": and it's implacations .. The term
or meaning of it speakes volumes .. And it would be most informative to have Kenneth Brooks or other expanded Authors
to weigh in both Historical and in a modern context Towards a true understanding of the Word that is so invocative ... Realy means , in fact it refers to the People who were Kidnapped
both by Slave traders and the local Tribes , both who sold their captives to the Slave traders ... The main Market for Slaves at the time was "Nigeria" that had a very established Slave trade ..
In fact the whole trade was Class based ...
This Market of selling off the lower classes was a well established market even in Europe .... Thus the term "Niggar"
evolved . and meant those that came from
"Nigeria" who were enslaved and sold on an open market...Later this term devolved to mean all those of dark complection who did not have FREE status
no matter where they came from ... So in the big picture the word "Niggar" is totally out of date and not representitave of even a slice of the African American Contributation to this Awsome Country .. It is time to move
foreward , We have each others backs ...

"...if the black community has embraced..." do you know any black people? i mean friends. not the grocery store checker or the mail person. friends. do your black friends "embrace" use of that word by children in their lives? mine don't. not from their children. not from their children's friends. not in the music they allow their children to listen to. you are making the same sweeping statements about black people that you are scolding them for
making about white people. can we stop? can we take each person as an individual, not part of some monolithic group that are all the same?
BTW, answering those kinds of questions for your child is called parenting.

If the black community has embraced the n-word amongst themselves, then who am I to argue with them? How do you explain to your 6 year old that it is OK for some people to use that word, but not others, without bringing race into the equation.

My 6 year old doesn't see white or black, he sees human. But if I have to explain to him that if he were black he could call another black this offensive word and it would be ok..but since he is white if he uses the same word it likely will get him a beat down.

Yes makes perfect sense. NOT. Daddy whats a cracker? Ritz son.

I wonder if these types
of discussions that I am having are as a result of living in Vallejo...versus say a less diverse community such as Idaho?

OK... Assuming Brook's is correct, how do we account for the white abolitionists, mostly men of the cloth, who preached against the evils of slavery and faced off those who cited passages in the Bible which supported it? What tribute do we pay to those whites that fought their own kin in a bloody war to free African Americans? Who risked their lives sheltering runaways? My ancestors were in that camp and my great grandfather always walked with limp from the chains he wore as a Southern prisoner of war. Later he served in the Legislature in West Virginia during reconstruction. In this blanket
blaming of whites for slavery and black oppression, it seems that those that were pivotal in ensuring equality are being completely ignored. It sure galls me when blacks actually suggest I am heir to slavers rather than the decendant of Methodist Episcopal preachers who were discerning enough not take the Bible literally.

I've finally had the opportunity to review the complaint filed against Paula Deen. For one, many people have been making this incident about the "N" word only, but it's much more than that. I personally find it to be offensive whenever someone from another race is accused of using the "N" word they are somehow given a pass because of the use of the "N" word by some in the black
communities. Let me be the first to say that I find the use of the word by anyone to be wrong. However, when it's used in a racist or insulting manner, it hurts more.

I think individuals who are trying to defend Paula Deen's use of the "N' word should probably familiarize themselves with all of the facts of the case against her. Just so you know, in case you didn't know, the person who initiated the complaint against Paula Deen and her brother is not "Black." She is a "white female" who was subjected to years of abuse and was finally fed up with her black employees being
treated like animals, so stop thinking it was a black person complaining about Paula Deen's use of the N word. Furthermore, Paula Deen indicated that she used the N word over 20 years ago. That is not what's being alleged against her. She went as far as telling a guy he was as black as a blackboard. That lady is something else and I'm glad I never supported any of her ventures. I personally find it insulting that so many black people are coming to the defense of Paula Deen after reading what she and her family subjected their employees to. When I learned about the major companies dropping
Paula Deen without being demanded to do so, I knew it was deep. The fact that any civil rights activist is supporting Paula Deen is insulting and is a slap in the face.

Here's a summary of some of the things being alleged against Paula Deen, her brother Bubba Hiers and the Deen business entities:

What we are witnessing is the rice of black supremacy in the United States, marked by the election in 2008 of a half-black President with an essentially Muslim and clearly non-American name a short 7 years after 9/11. The history of how this was actually made to occur has yet to be written, but my hunch is that it will be stunning, shocking and not at all what people think it would be.

I never heard of Paula Deen before this little tempest, but one thing I know--the utterance of a WORD should not, in America, result in the destruction of a person. If every white person who said the word
'******' in their lives had their lives systematically destroyed as Deen's life is being destroyed by a ruthless yet idiotic black cabal, and by accommodating white self-haters and apologists, most white people would be on welfare or dead. And THAT, for many black, is really the objective here. As for the white people who are ripping Deen to shreds, there is no hope of understanding that in any other context except self-hatred. Idiots & fools all.

One thing I know--black people do NOT control the English dictionary--even the slang dictionary. The word '******' should be spoken far more
in public--good grief, it is spoken and SUNG more than enough by black performers in public, providing them the opportunity to buy their Ferraris and Lamborghinis and Glocks.

The whole episode is emblematic of the rapidly accelerating demise of the United States, where lies and idiocy dominate the socio-political realm. Aside from this basic fact, this episode isn't worth talking about.

"What goes on here?"

This is a slow demise of failed culture. Regardless of who is at fault, blacks en masse in this country are not succeeding. Race baiting is a lazy excuse for community leadership. Charlatans and scoundrels.
Is racisism only for White fol   |June.30.2013
The real question is, is there reverse racism? No silly, the reverse of racism would be not racist.

Therefore, do only white folks commit racism? The reason that I ask is that folks of all color can attack white folks and call them anything they like. If a white person were to do the same as in Paula Deen, it is racist.

I don't agree with any racist talk or words from any person of any color. Lets make all racist talk just plain racist! Lets not allow anyone of any color to talk bad about any other culture period!!!

Lets take the Vallejo school district, there are actually only 15
percent white kids, when a white kid is attacked by a black kid, it is considered just a school fight. When a black kid is assaulted by a white kid, the NAACP is practically called out.

Get my point? What goes on here?

Also have you ever heard of "MY White Christian Bakery?" How about the White Chamber of Commerce? Insert the word "White or Anglo" into any organizations name and you are going to be having a "racist" problem. Why do the races cry about "equal" yet they separate themselves by giving themselves a "label?"

Separate is not equal, is
this not the most popular mantra right now?

BTW, I am of color and I find it hypocritical how the races want to be separate yet equal...
