Casa de Vallejo Fire

Interview with Rick Grant--Casa de Vallejo Healthcare Worker

Text and Video

"I think it will haunt me forever" is how Rick Grant an in home healthcare worker who works at Casa de Vallejo describes the tragedy at the senior residence.  Grant describes the community of seniors at Casa de Vallejo as "close knit". While still clearly shaken by the events of early Friday morning he considers it lucky there were not more fatalities. Of the 117 seniors at Casa de Vallejo one resident died in the fire. As of today the fate of the 116 seniors who escaped the flames is uncertain.  They are housed in local hotels or other facilities by the Red Cross.

Apparently, a passing civilian first spotted the fire and took the initiative to wake residents and start helping them out of the building before police and fire personnel arrived.  That person clearly deserves our appreciation along with the efforts of public safety.

During the interview we discuss the placement and efficiency of sprinklers in the building.  Apparently sprinklers were installed in the hallways, but not in individual rooms---rooms where oxygen may have been in use.  Not in the interview is the fact, according to Grant, that staffing had been cut in recent years and the residence no longer maintained a 24 hour front desk.  This may have been a factor in the timeliness of the emergency response.
