Guardian Angels in Vallejo?
8/20/08 By Marc Garman Text and Video
In the past month the city of Oakland has officially made the Guardian Angels a part of their efforts to reduce crime. Other cities have as well. For those of you unfamiliar with the group...it is a non-profit organization comprised of citizens committed to improving their community by making it safer. Started in 1979 by Curtis Sliwa the Guardian Angels are now an international organization. More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardian_Angels Starting today a group of Guardian Angels will be on patrol for the Wednesday night festivities on Georgia Street. Vallejo Main Street representative Robert Briseno has been supportive of bringing in the group--"We're excited about anything that improves the quality of life in the downtown." he said.
Council members Gomes, Bartee and Schivley have also participated in this effort.
Of course, the Guardian Angels are a community based group. The volunteers coming to the Wednesday Night Festival are on loan from Oakland, San Francisco, Sacramento and San Jose. Without community volunteers nothing long term can happen. This means that we need YOU to help make Vallejo better. So, come down and meet the Guardian Angels and get involved. Vallejo PD has given its approval of the project. Of course, a group like this can never replace the police, but it can act as a supplement to their efforts. Let's work together to make Vallejo better.
If you have questions or want to volunteer you can reach Oakland Chapter Leader Cristina Fernandez at: 510-459-9566 or
