Binding Arbitration


5/27/09--Tonight's meeting of the Charter Review Committee again will focus on Binding (interest) Arbitration and its inclusion (or not) in the Vallejo City Charter.  Members of the public are specifically invited to comment.

The 1st District Court of Appeal in San Francisco ruled that Senate Bill 440, a state law that passed in 2003, was unconstitutional.

The law gave police and firefighter unions, which by law are not allowed to go on strike, the right to demand binding arbitration of contracts that they didn't like. It required cities and counties to abide by the arbitration panel's decision unless their governing bodies could muster a unanimous vote to overturn it.
