Pin the Tail on the City Manager

Vallejo City Council expected to Choose New City Manager on Monday

5/27/09

By Marc Garman

In the latest move by Vallejo's City council majority, a new City Manager, or at least interim replacement for Vallejo's departing City Manager Joe Tanner, is expected to be chosen Monday June 1.  While the agenda has not yet been posted, the City Clerk's office has confirmed that a meeting is scheduled.

Three names have been circulating the corridors of Vallejo City Hall in the past few days as possible choices for Vallejo's top management position.   They are:

  • Craig Whittom--Vallejo's current Assistant City Manager
  • Bob Adams--Vallejo's Planning Director
  • Sandy Salerno--Consultant/City Labor Negotiator for City of Vallejo
  •

Considering the lack of transparency in the process so far, VIB decided to gather a few basic facts on these three likely candidates.  Here they are for comparison:

 Craig Whittom
 Bob Adams
Sandy Salerno
Education: Bachelor's B.A. Economics & Public Policy, Duke University B.A., University of California, Berkeley B.A. Economics, Brooklyn College of the City University, New York
Education: Master's Master of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley Master of Public Administration, Brigham Young University None
CM Experience Asst. City Manager, Vallejo, CA (2006-present)

 City Manager, Manteca, CA (1996-2008)

City Manager, Lafayette, CA (1988-96)

City Manager, Dinuba, CA (1981-88)

Interim City Manager, East Palo Alto (9 months)

Interim City Manager, City of Belmont (length of time not known)

It is our hope that the individual with the highest qualifications is chosen for the position. It would be preferable to see a proper candidate search, but this seems unlikely.  The City Manager is the individual who is expected to guide Vallejo through the current legal and financial hurdles the city faces.

A candidate chosen based on a political agenda rather than competence could be the next in a series of unfortunate events that comprise the actions of Vallejo's City Council Majority.
