On March 4, 2010, Vallejo teachers gathered at the waterfront to protest cuts and layoffs in education.

106 teachers are receiving pink slips.

Ironic that teachers in Vallejo are getting layoffs, while other employees are in line for raises.

Kleenex Moment   |March.07.2010
Somebody pass the kleenex and a pacifier to that whinning momster who can't stop crying about her pet project. "Whaaa, whaaa, whaaa! I didn't get to spend the city's money the way I wanted to! Whaaaa, whaaa, whaaa!" "I wanted to pick the crayons to color with! Whaaa, whaaa, whaaa"!

What would benefit Vallejo and help get it on track is to continue to ignore these myopic, special interest driven people like "momster" who don't live in Vallejo, don't contribute anything but hot air, and continually bore us with their personal issues. Grow up Momster!

Also, this is the 6 month anniversary of Prichard Al stopping payments on all pensions the town is responsible for while their 2nd Chapter 9 filing proceeds.

As far as I'm concerned, nothing will ever change in Vallejo until Vallejo gets better mentors and creative leaders who are willing to take risk and quit sitting on GRANT MONEY. There is no reason Code Enforcement should be in charge of community grant money or public art. I attended a public art show at the Deyoung. The reason the artist were so creative is b/c they didn't have government breathing down their necks tellling them how to do something they know nothing about , so I'm not sure why Vallejo put CE in charge of a community mural.

Vallejo leaders needs to quit being stifling
and let the commmunity breath and create.
Done with the CTA   |March.06.2010
Dave Cary

Slick little presentation/website but not very realistic or practical. I think you promised everyone everything but most of what you promised is beyond your sphere of influence. The schools are failing. You should focus on what you can accomplish in the schools and let the rest take care of itself.

If you really want to improve school performance you should either encourage Charter Schools, or enact change in the teachers union. Protecting people that are not deserving of the privilege to teach our youth only fosters mediocrity while discouraging the teachers that strive
for excellence. We pay the best teachers at the same rate we pay the worst teachers; shameful!

All about the money! And when is the CTA gonna quit pimping the kids to promote there own self serving agenda?

The State, County, and City are all broke and have been suffering from declining revenue for two years. Enrollment has decreased by 25% over the past four years; why no adjustments when enrollment was declining? Now Calstrs is going to be asking for much larger contributions from taxpayers. Instead of asking for more money maybe the school district should be contributing more to
their own retirement so everyone else has a few bucks left in their pocket.

How many tens of millions of education directed tax payer dollars does the CTA unions siphon off the top to the pay the salaries of union officials and union lobbyists?

Time for the CTA, teachers, and administrators to quit the BS, share the pain, and improve the system with the Billions they have. Either they get it right or get the heck out of the way.

Charter School Advocate   |March.06.2010
Gran Torino,

I have, too have been looking at options, and yes, Vallejo Charter is probably the best public option, Vallejo is very lucky to have an alternative, and yes, there are really great charters outside the district as well. Vallejo Charter should not be the only charter/magnet school in Vallejo. If there were more charter/magnets schools, Vallejo would lose less students.
Gran Torino   |March.05.2010
Out of town charter parent,

Not sure how you can base your entire opinion of the Vallejo Charter School on a "tour". The site is the old Davidson school, built decades ago. If you are looking for a brand new facility you won't find it there. Alas, there is much more to a school than the age of its walls. I'm not sure what your point is. Without actally spending a great deal of time with the students and staff or enrolling your child, you have no clue about the quality of education your child would receive there. Good luck to you and whatever you are looking for.
Out of Town Charter Parent   |March.05.2010
Vallejo Parent, are you kidding? I toured VCS, it doesn't come class to Charter schools elsewhere.

WHY KIDS HATE SCHOOL!
CRRAAAZY   |March.05.2010
Vallejo Parent - The only issue with that suggestion is your children are still subject to our pathetic school board. I removed my children from the district so they will never be at the mercy of the morons on this school board. Not an honest one in the bunch, they can all kiss my @$$!
Vallejo Parent   |March.05.2010
Charter schools can work with school districts, too, such as Vallejo Charter School, an Expeditionary Laarning charter school within VCUSD. The classroom teachers are part of the teachers union. If VCSUD continues to add programs like VCS, the district can gain students instead of losing them to other districts, private schools, etc.
Out of Town Charter Parent   |March.05.2010
I drive 40 minutes to take our daughter to charter out of district. None of the teachers are union. Our daughter is receiving an exceptional education. The teachers are brilliant and prefer to work without the limitations of state and union laws. If you speak to the director, she has had an ongoing war with the CTA.

I think parents need to start charters without the hindrance of the CTA.

i can't believe santa cruz is making $195,000/year.

he is incompetent compared to bull, overpaid and needs to take a serious pay cut.

Stephanie Gomes and Marti Brown "bullet vote" last election was run on the platform of making Vallejo into a "college town". With this kind of protest action and budget problems going on now, how is Gomes/Brown going to make this happen?
CRRAAAZY   |March.05.2010
Why do we need the same number of administrators, put up in a new building, when student enrollment has been dropping for years?! This doesn't pass the "stink" test. They should go BEFORE teachers go.
Firebug   |March.05.2010
avatar The "rollover" was brought up in the Times Herald and affirmed by teachers posting on that blog. I don't think ANY school district got a COLA for the last three years and this year the COLA is in fact a negative COLA (a cut). Combine that with almost 5000 students leaving Vallejo schools since 2001 and your COLA evaporates with the loss of attendance.

School budgets are declining everywhere, and I find it quite arrogant that a collective group of people would want cuts to come from somewhere else and that includes Administrators if they aren't taking any cuts.
a teacher   |March.05.2010
Firebug,
we are not asking to "rollover" the contract that expired in 2008. In 2004, teachers agreed to give up their full benefits package in order to help the district out of its fiscal crisis. Teachers agreed to pay for 20% of their health benefits, which expired in June 2008. Currently, teachers pick up 100% of the increases to health benefits, which have increased by about 13% since June 2008.

Over the past five years, the District has received 20% COLA, but teachers & classified staff only received 4.5% in increases during this time. This 4.5% increase has been significantly
reduced by the increase to our cost in health benefits.

We are asking to maintain our health benefits at their current levels. Vallejo's teachers are already the lowest paid in Solano county, but our superintendent is the second highest paid.

We are not even asking for a pay raise, even though management received a significant pay raise a couple of year ago.

The district has the money. They currently have $24 million in a rainy day fun as well as their 3.5% reserve.

finally, when you look at the cuts the district is currently proposing, all of them are classified & teaching
positions. The ONLY administrative positions that they are "eliminating" are two positions that have never been filled & one position that is being combined with another position. No administrator in this district is in danger of losing their job.
Anonymous   |March.05.2010
The Teachers Union need to stop fighting against the formation of charter schools, and expell the policy that protects incompetent or disinterested teachers.
Firebug   |March.05.2010
avatar Isn't true that teachers want to "rollover" their contract that expired in 2008? If that is the case then isn't it true that since funding from the State has been reduced since 2008 which would mean that they want the cuts to come from somewhere else?Since the lions share of the MDUSD general fund goes to teacher compensation the little game being played smacks me of the PSU's saying cut from somewhere else.
Robert Beguiristain   |March.05.2010
I wanted to say thanks VIB for properly documenting what I had to say. The Vallejo Times used a partial quote and seems to edit out anything that does not fit their perceptions of a given event. I appreciate it. Robert
Question is...   |March.05.2010
If the student enrollment has declined by 4000 kids in the last 4 years, why did it take so long to lay off teachers. In affect, there were 4000 less kids, but we basically kept the same amount of teachers until last year, class size was relatively small, but we saw no real improvement in test scores. What the heck is going on at VUSD? A teacher I know that teaches at VUSD says that kids are promoted to the next grade even if they cant do the work. Kids that have behavior problems and disturb the class are not expelled, the class just has to put up with them. Classrooms are not condusive
for learning, kids in middle and high schools are worried about thier saftey in the class rooms and on campus. You cannot run a school district like this, no wonder many middle and upper middle class parents are sending their kids to private schools.
