Vallejo Youth Together Expo

By Ruscal Cayangyang

4/26/10

After weeks of planning and hard work, Vallejo Youth Together members ( Ashley Murphy, myself (Ruscal Cayangyang), Maria Guevara, Daniel Rojas, Debbie Rojas, Mina Diaz, Bridgette Lewis, Harriet Carion, Frances Macbee, Liliana Padilla, Shontha Bohanon, Gerardo Rocha and many more ), organized the 1st ever Vallejo Youth Together Expo, in Vallejo’s history. It was held on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Solano College Vallejo Center, on 545 Columbus Pkwy.

"Youth Expo is all about the youth." said Stephanie Godinez. "This is the day that all the youth and life of Vallejo is being celebrated, and acknowledged for the light they have shined and will continue to shine in Vallejo. We the youth are the future."

During the expo, hundreds of people attended, as well as Vallejo Vice Mayor Stephanie Gomes and Councilwoman Marti Brown. The expo featured youth vendors, community organizations, performers, dances, martial arts, games, Wild 94.9, and much much more! There was an influx of community and business support to help with the expo.

"This expo was put together so that youth from Vallejo to show how much they care about their city." said Liliana Padilla. "We are this city, we love this city."

The idea of the expo was first conceived from the Vallejo Together meetings, which was way back in February. Since then, there were many planning meetings within a limited time frame.

"Vallejo should support it because it for our youth!" said Shontha Bohanon. "They need to know that we care about them and that they have a voice too."

"Vallejo is filled with wonderful and bright young people." said Jacalyn Evone. "Providing an atmosphere that promotes and highlights the talent of our youth, educates, entertains and is safe and inviting is important to all of us."

"It represents the foundation of a movement to assist our youth to become aware of a bigger world of choices that are available." said Harriet Carion. "As a community, it is an opportunity to begin healing and invigorating one of the important populations who are one part of the constellation we call the community of Vallejo."

But we're not done yet. Looking ahead, Vallejo Youth Together will be planning and organizing some great things this year, in addition plan for next year's Vallejo Youth Together Expo.

"We adults need to show our young citizens the respect they deserve and that we care about their needs and future in this community." said Debra Rojas. "Please support Vallejo Youth Together in our efforts to achieve a positive atmosphere for our most valuable resources, our children."

Less activist than I expected this to be. I wasn't there because I didn't feel like being patronized by my own peers on crap that's not relevant and talk circles around real social issues and actually progressing on them.
