Vallejo City Council
Special Meeting May 4, 2010
“Mini-ME…eting”
By Katy Miessner 5/5/10 This was a “special meeting” called by Mayor Osby Davis so that he could buy more time to edit the Youth Commission resolution and Ordinance.
This was first brought to council on April 13 by Councilmember Gomes after a lot of organizing work she and youth activists Ruscal Cayangyang, Maria Guevara and others collaborated on.
So what where the edits suggested by Mayor Davis (besides the edits suggested by council when this was brought back for edits on April 27)? The word “commission” in the document that was capitalized was changed to lower case. The word “commission” appeared eight times, so it had to be changed eight times. And of course, Gomes’ name had to be redacted from the resolution (mop brow).
Somewhere between April 13 and May 4, a typo made its way into the resolution that no one caught! (It’s “were’s Waldo”: read page 2, fourth paragraph of the staff report and see if you can find it.) The reason I bring this up is that the Public, City Staff and other councilmembers had to wait three weeks for what were minimal edits that could have been done after the first meeting (or at least before the second as was promised). But a special meeting had to be set because Davis couldn’t get his act together to change the capitalization on the word “commission.” How much staff time did this take? Re-editing the document, announcing the special meeting, mailing the council packets out to councilmembers three times. It is a waste of resources that we don’t have. And when all is said and done, there’s a typo in the resolution.
Thank goodness the meeting was only a minute long.
Proposed action: adopt the resolution.
